Album Review: Voidlurker - Industrial Nightmare
Reviewed by Neil Bolton
Let’s see if this Birmingham trio can play music as well as they can create a band name, because that is a cool name... Wha wha pedal leads quickly onto a heavy crunchy Doom laden riff, quickly answering the question. And the answer is yes. In fact let’s put that in capitals YES!
The first track on this four song E.P. Is named 'Bitchcraft and Misery' and if you like your doom, stoner, metal, fuzz rock, sludge or what ever you want to monicker it, this will please. Cool riffs complemented with competent vocals and head bobbing drumming. Including a Black Sabbath break down to cause the singer Brad, to howl "Fuck". You will howl it too, the next time you listen to Voidlurker and there will be many more times you listen to this.
Track two, the E.P.s title track, 'Industrial Nightmare' slows down proceedings, and track one was not fast thrash metal. This is professional level doom. We slow down even further in this track at about 5 minutes, rivalling Crowbar at their most metal. Then wow we finish on a fast metal flurry, the mixing of musical speeds works perfectly, nothing feels forced or gimmicky.
'Jeffrey Doomer' entertains in the same way the first two somgs do. Riffs just keep pouring from this band, big ones too. Once again with a pace change to the end of the track. A small pace change though. 'Rotten Seed' is the final track and is over 8 min long, get comfortable, and enjoyable. If you have got to this point in the E.P. You obviously like what you are hearing, and what you are hearing in 'Rotten Seed' seems to some up this band entirely. Slow, powerful and metal as fuck.
'Industrial Nightmare' is indeed an excellent introduction to Voidlurker, and leaves me with a wish to see if they can do it live as well as on record. And a small amount of research tells me of a gig coming up soon near me.
Hhmmmmnnn!
Voidlurker release 'Industrial Nightmare' via APF Records on January 31st.
