Album Review: Conquerors - Stormbringer

It’s highly likely you’ll need a good wash after listening to this album, such is the filth that flows forth once you hit play. This is brutal black thrash in its rawest form. The title track rips the skin from the face and from there on, it’s simply a case of managing the urge to lose all control or hit the stop button.
If you do choose the former, and you’ll receive my respect for forging through this 37-minute soundtrack to the gates of Hell, then don’t expect any respite, gentle interludes, or sweet harmonies. This is an album devoid of melody, and at times it sounds more like three teenagers from 1987 in their dad’s garage. But there is also something which draws you in, caught in a tractor beam from which there is no option but to submit.
There is something about the sheer energy, the face-melting assault that is captivating. The sheer pace of ‘World Eater’ or the harrowing intensity of ‘Crushing the Faith’ and ‘Altar of Tempest’ is brutal. At times, the French outfit sound like a racehorse out of control, careering all over the place whilst those innocent bystanders dive for cover in a futile attempt to avoid being smacked across the head.
This really is a cacophony which will appeal to the most extreme fan. Having been around since 2013, the trio that comprise Conquerors, Morty (guitar and vocals), Ottar (bass) and drummer Anfauglith certainly focus on a delivery that is uncompromising and relentless. The production is basic but I kinda liked it. Fancy being battered by a shovel. Then try this for size.
