DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring We Are Sovereign

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring We Are Sovereign

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find We Are Sovereign sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

So you're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Hey Razor’s Edge! Thanks for having us! We’ve all got our bikini tops on made of coconut shells (bridges burnt lessons learnt written on them) and pirate patches polishing our ships and treasure as we answer these. Laura’s got Britains next top mermaid model at 9pm so hopefully we get off this island in time.

Laura(Vocalist/screams): ohh this is a tough one! I’d have to say Bullet For My Valentine 'The Poison' because it’s the reason I started screaming and every song on there is amazing! The nostalgic feels I get when listening to it is something else. (blaring it out drinking the good old strongbow with your mates in a field back in the day) oops I left another cd in the case from last time *drum roll with a pair of crabs legs I found* it’s My Chemical Romance Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge. Absolute masterpiece.

Ash(Vocalist/cleans): I'd probably choose 'Nerve Endings' by Too Close To Touch, such a mixture of feely songs, that people need to be reminded to feel before we eat each other from starvation.

Sebastian (Guitarist): The album I could not live without is AC/DC’s 'High Voltage' album. This is because the music on this album motivates me in music and is one of my favourites!

Sam (Bassist): 'Common Dreads' by Enter Shikari. Every song on that album is different but still conveys the same message. Each track has been masterfully written and I can listen to it all day.

Alfie (Drummer): Bring me the horizon - 'Suicide Season'. That album was a massive part of my life, I used to play it every day on the way to anywhere with my mum in the car. It’s around the time when BMTH were changing their sound slightly and the album's so versatile, got some right stinky ass breakdowns (Chelsea Smile) so I could start a circle pit on the beach with my crab homies.

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

Laura: I’d choose Asking Alexandria 'Stand Up and Scream'. Why? because I’d train myself to get Matilda powers (like she does in the film) to be able to move the microphone from the poster to my hand so I can plug it into a palm tree and scream my heart out. Hand out some flyers to some fish, get a gig going pass the time you know.

Ash: Well it's gonna have to be ADTR 'Homesick' because the artwork is crazy cool and the title will definitely define my feelings.

Sebastian: The album cover I would choose is Megadeth, 'Rust in Peace'. The artwork on it is very colourful and has a cool meaning behind it.

Sam: Pink Floyd 'Dark Side of the Moon.' My dad is the person who started my love for music. Him and I love Pink Floyd and this is our favourite album.

Alfie: Infant annihilator - 'The Battle of Yaldabaoth'. Not only is it a masterpiece, but the album art itself is unreal!!! There’s so much going on in the front cover you could sit for hours and just look at everything drawn on there, whoever did the artwork is so good!

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

Laura: 100% going to be Ouzo. With any mixer as long as it’s not sweaty salty sea water.

Ash: Rum and coke. No coke? Just the rum then please!

Sebastian: My drink of choice would be whiskey. I really enjoy having a casual drink!

Sam: Gin and tonic, a perfect refreshing drink that will always be my choice at any bar.

Alfie: Vodka please sir, don’t bother with the mixer. I'll find a coconut if I need one.

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

Laura: For me it’d have to be my AC/DC 'Hells Bells' Longsleeve Jumper. It’s so comfy and I'm a huge huge huge AC/DC fan.

Ash: All Time Low had band merch that said "BONER" across the front. You never asked for a reason so you shall not get one!

Sebastian: The band merchandise I would salvage is Pantera 'Vulgar Ddisplay of Power' t shirt because I love the band and I really like the design.

Sam: My Enter Shikari flag, they are my fav Band and the flag will fly high on the island.

Alfie: My Infant Annihilator t-shirt of a woman being disemboweled by a crucifix, I can wear it without offending anybody for a change.

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

Laura: I’m going to say it loud and proud. Little Mix. Many people don’t believe me when I say this but I actually really do like them haha! I think they’re so incredibly talented and their voices would chill me out. Queens of harmonies. I’d be sitting there sipping a coconut while they sang to me. They’re also pretty nice to look at haha can’t argue that.

Ash: Bear Grylls or Ray Mears, both survival experts and will most likely help me survive this perilous situation. Preferably Ray Mears as Bear will probably make me drink his urine.

Sebastian: I would like to have been shipwrecked with Slipknot because they seem like a cool bunch.

Sam: Rou Reynolds, the man's thoughts and opinions fascinate me and I would love to sit down to converse with him. He also seems like a realist and may help get us off the island.

Alfie: Lil Peep and Juice Wrld, we’d just party and talk about each other's feelings all night.

DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring We Are Sovereign

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Laura: I literally can’t decide between it being Slipknot I saw in December 2008 or My Chemical Romance I got to see in 2005 for £13.50. Both shows will always stay with me. I was very lucky to witness the original line up of Slipknot and Joey Jordison’s incredible mad upside down drum solo and My Chemical Romance at such a small scale so I'd love to watch them again. I’ll trade some seaweed if I can have two tapes. thanks.

Ash: Any Linkin Park show. Unfortunately I never saw them before our beloved Chester departed so I'd make it up to them by watching them everyday until the battery dies.

Sebastian: The one tape I would have is AC/DC’s live at the river plate. This is because of how energetic it is and how energetic it makes me feel.

Sam: Green Day at Hyde park 2017. One of the best live performances I ever witnessed. Even before the show me and the whole crowd sang bohemian rhapsody which became a viral sensation.

Alfie: Slipknot at Download 2019, been waiting to see them live since i was 6, my sister got me into it and it was such a big thing finally seeing them together.

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

Laura: I’d have to say the legend Angus Young from AC/DC. It’d say “look mate I have YOU tattooed on my right leg the least you can do is grab a fishing rod and a helicopter and get your sprucy self to Devil’s Island to save us”

He’d also be so sick at catching fish with his bare hands to eat with how fast he moves around the stage haha.

Ash: "Dear Oli Sykes, Get your arse on a row boat and row it to devil's island or I'll never listen to Bring me the horizon ever again" (I'm sure the threat would work right?)

Sebastian: Even though she’s on the island I’d say our very own Laura because she is so determined and never gives up even when it gets tough!

Sam: Dave king, lead singer of flogging Molly, I supported them at rock city and met him afterwards he is lovely. Plus they have a cruise that could pick me up.

Alfie: Rou Reynolds, soundest lad he’d deffo come rescue me.

You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

Laura: I’d feel bad sacrificing one member so to play fair I’d get everyone including myself to hand over a few toes. Could make a toe crumble, or a toe soup. Either way nobody dies and We Are Sovereign gets to do another record. Sorry Alfie, I hope you can still drum like.

Ash: Laura! There's enough ink on that body to add some juicy flavour to that roast human I'm about to scran... Sorry Loz!

Sebastian: I would sacrifice Alfie because if not he would eat me hahahah

Sam: I feel like Sebastian would volunteer to be eaten bless him. I’d sacrifice myself however there isn’t much on me.

Alfie: Sam the bassist, there's not much meat on him but he’s vegan and doesn’t consume dairy so he’d taste the best and be the healthiest….right?

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

Laura: I’d have to say Oli Sykes. I love how he does and wears what he wants and doesn't care what people think. I've been a fan since the very beginning (This Is What The Edge Of Your Seat Was Made For) and he's a massive influence on the building of finding my own vocal sound. I also love how progressive he is and how he isn't scared to change sounds or try new things. He does what he believes in regardless of the potential backlash and I get so inspired by that.

Ash: Jeremy McKinnon, we are about to be the best of friends together on a desert island buddy!

Sebastian: I would save Angus Young because this guy has influenced me and my thoughts on music. Angus is one of my idols and inspires my music career.

Sam: Mark Hoppus from blink 182. He is the reason I started playing bass. I follow his style of playing and writing. He has a funny outlook on life and makes me realise life’s too short not to have fun or a laugh. I hope he recovers soon.

Alfie: Joey Jordison, one of the best in the world, not to mention he seems the nicest dude ever, he’s my number one music influence and will be in my heart forever.
