DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Collected

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Collected

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Collected sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

So you're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Charlie: 'Ocean Machine' by Devin Townsend for me. I love this album because it was the first time, I heard the 'wall of sound' style used in a dynamic melodic way and it made me realise how encompassing that type of music could be. It enabled me to detach from reality for brief moments which at the time I only thought possible through alcohol and gaming. The emotive transitions that you go through listening to this album is a journey I will never tire of taking; it has got me through the toughest periods of my life so far and no doubt it will continue to do so in the years to come. It's been the biggest influence on how I approach music and the type of music I want to create, and that's why it stands at the top for me. A true masterpiece of music that will stand the test of time.

Arty: 'The Life of Pablo' - Kanye West, I used to play 1 different track each day to go with my morning coffee, it's a morning routine I don't think I can stop.

H: I chose Miley Cyrus - 'She Is Coming' because it’s a bop.

Liam: 'Descension' and 'Ascension' by Coheed and Cambria because they are two albums that have helped me through the bad and the good in my past.

Chris: May be a cop out but some sort of 70/80s soul/funk compilation album I'd need the somewhat variety to keep my sanity.

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

Charlie: Blink 182 - Enema of the state, feel like it would inspire my night-time research.

Arty: Unapologetic - Rhianna. So I can stare at her underboob until the day I die

Chris: Lateralus by tool so that when I’m tripping from dehydration I have something to get lost in.

Liam: Mothership by Dance Gavin Dance because the imagery is something you can look at for a while, the more intently you look it can tell you stories.

H: Probably Dangerous Days by Perturbator. Has a bit of everything you could want.

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

Charlie: Still water with ice and lemon.

Arty: Vodka Cranberry, but if the vodka runs out, Wrey and Nephews with pineapple juice, but if the Wrey runs out, JD and coke, but if the JD runs out, Bailey's, but if the Bailey's runs out, Mojito, but if the Mojito runs out, Red wine, but if the red wine runs out, I'm good with water.

H: Another cranberry juice.

Liam: Summer fruit squash because if you’re stuck on an island it's all about survival. Anyways, who puts a bar on desert island?

Chris: Mojitos got that refreshing feeling.

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

H: My ‘The Faceless’ tee that I’ve literally had since about 16 and at some point became a vest as all good band tees do.

Arty: My After The Burial Shorts.

Charlie: Probably my ‘Vulgar display of power’ T-shirt/now vest because I’ve had it the longest and it’s my favourite Pantera album. Getcha pull!

Liam: Well obviously the poster, that's why it's on the wall?

Chris: The Tenacious D cum rag.

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

Arty: Grimes.

Charlie: Bear Grylls, that guy knows his way round a dessert island. Also, if we got too hungry his film crew probably has some pizza knocking about and if I got bored as I could push him into a wasp nest and watch his face inflate, all bases covered.

H: Johnny Demarco.

Liam: David Attenborough because it'll be nice to meet him and learn a few things before you starve to death.
But honestly, Joe Exotic would be a pretty interesting one #freejoeexotic.

Chris: My dogs.

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Liam: Rage against the Machine live at the Grand Olympic Auditorium, it's one the best live shows I've ever watched! It kicks off.

H: Johnny demarco’ Roland cube 80x 2009 Winter NAMM demo.

Charlie: The Devin Townsend Project/Meshuggah co headline show, with Periphery supporting, I saw at Brixton academy. That is still the best show I’ve ever witnessed.

Chris: Devin Townsend Live at Plovdiv Bulgaria. A full orchestra accompanying his sound was immense especially in an ancient theatre.

Arty: he show where I lost my gig virginity at, watching Acrania and Thy art is murder

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

Arty: I'll send my message out to Enrique Iglesias. Hopefully he can be my hero, baby.

Charlie: Sting, I don’t know much about him, but I saw him save Bart from a well in the Simpsons, and that’s good enough for me.

H: Bruce Dickinson. He has a plane.

Liam: The Rock i know he's not in a band but that guy is a beast. He would get me out of any situation.

Chris: Ozzy Osbourne doing some prince of darkness ritual wizardry shit.

You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

Arty: Chris cos he's the newbie.

H: Me. I clearly have the plumpest cake.

Chris: This is a tough one in terms of thickness, it would be Haitch, you know…. more meat for your munch. On the other hand I’m the newest and youngest member of the band so could be fresher meat if those mad conspiracies are anything to go off.

Charlie: I’d put myself forward, I’ll be honest I don’t like the beach very much, always seem to get sand in my butt crack and shat on by seagulls, so the quicker I could get out of there in whatever means, the better.

Liam: Artis because out of the lot of us he's got the most meat to share between us.

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

Chris: My dad not technically a musician but he was a DJ in the 70's so set up a lot of inspiration and people to look in musically.

H: Johnny Demarco.

Charlie: Devin Townsend, he’s all in one for me, his views, the way he creates, what he creates, his vocal ability, his longevity, how he performs, I could go on and on lol no one inspires me more. Also, he’s funny as fuck! Love the man.

Arty: Mike Mitchell, his drumming is outrageous and a huge inspiration for me, there are honestly countless musicians out there but I think he's an alien so I'll save him as he's one of a kind.

Liam: Michael Jackson because his theatrical performance and he's not afraid of breaking down barriers.
