DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Lightlorn

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Lightlorn

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Swedish duo lightlorn sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Renwar: Wow, that’s a really hard question. There are so many albums that I feel I couldn’t live without. But if I had to choose just one, it’d probably be Arcturus - La Masquerade Infernale. That was the album that made me realize that black metal didn’t need to be formulaic, that there are other approaches to music and there is room to explore different sounds and sonic textures. Plus, all the songs on that album are so good, I never get sick of listening to it.

Riaan: Cradle of Filth - Dusk and Her Embrace. The very first black metal album I bought. Was the coffin edition. We might very well die here.

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

Renwar: Probably something like Cradle of Filth’s Vempire or Theatre of Tragedy’s Velvet Darkness They Fear. They are pleasing to look at and will come in “handy” on those long, lonely nights on the island.

Riaan: Emperor - Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk. Brings back good memories, nothing more than that really.

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

Renwar: Rum! It’s the only drink that’s perfectly suited to a desert island! Plus, it’s good for the heart and can even help prevent scurvy. Just crack open a coconut and you’ve got yourself the ultimate island cocktail.

Riaan: Chang beer, thanks to good times in Thailand.

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

Renwar: I have this very cool Emperor t-shirt that I bought a few years back. I’ve never really been able to wear it since it’s a Large size and I can’t fit into anything smaller than an XL! So, after a few weeks stranded on the island, that Emperor shirt would fit perfectly.

Riaan: Cap. Dimmu Borgir.

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

Renwar: My first instinct is to say my wife and kids, but I guess I don’t want them to have to go through that. So, I would have to say Les Stroud from Survivorman. If there’s anyone that could help you when you’re shipwrecked, it’s a survivalist!

Riaan: Never betray your bandmate! Then again, how about Charlize Theron joins the band?

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Renwar: Well, the show that stands out the most for me was Grave opening for At the Gates in Gothenburg around 5 years ago. I’ve seen plenty of bands live, but Grave really put on an awesome show. I’ve never in my life felt like dancing to metal, but that show was goddam great.

Riaan: Legacy of the best - Iron Maiden 2019

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

Renwar: Why am I getting desperate? There’s rum!

Riaan: Bruce Dickinson - He can fly a plane!

Renwar: That’s a good answer! I’ll get on that plane as soon as the rum is gone.

You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

Renwar: I foresee a Riaan BBQ in the very near future. Slow cooked with a rum marinade and coconut fries on the side.

Riaan: There is only 1 other band member... guess he's it.

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

Renwar: That would have to be Flo Schwartz from Pyogenesis. That band has played so many different styles over the years, from doom metal on their early release to alternative metal to fucking pop punk! He basically just plays whatever music he feels like. I really respect that, plus, the songs are all excellent!

Riaan: Tjodalv (ex-Dimmu Borgir). Just started playing black metal when I bought Enthrone Darkness Triumphant. That album has been a major influence on me.
