Album Review: Lost Brethren - Dimensional Rift

With the popularity of technical death metal remaining increasingly strong, it would be very easy to miss bands in the ever evolving style and Lost Brethren may very well be one of those acts which may have passed you by. The band who have been active since 2011 originally as an instrumental project later transcended into a full band who’s themes are heavily entrenched with science fiction are currently signed with Irish label Grindscene Records, and are due to release a new EP and their 5th release in total.

Dimensional Rift (or dimensional riff as I am lovingly referring to it as because its chocked full of them) is utterly furious and takes zero time in going straight for the jugular with its highly technical approach which reminds me of acts like Spawn of Possession and newer Deeds of Flesh, with its execution. The songs instantly make a mark on you as you listen through them with incredibly tight musicianship throughout the release which is combined with some extremely creative song writing to help fuse together the tracks into a giant slab of technical precision.

The creativity of the lead playing is also something I very much enjoyed about this release, take the title track which opens with absolute fury before melting into a maze of fantastic lead work. When I saw the band in Nottingham last August this track really made its mark on me as an attendee so seeing what the band have done in the studio and seeing how breathtaking this particular track came out makes it all the better. Also in terms of production the band working alongside Stefano Morabito at 16th Cellar Studios was certainly the right choice as the EP sounds in every way what a display of technical death metal should sound like.

Even with just 4 tracks Dimensional Rift will not leave you feeling cheated. It really has brought a selection of finely crafted tracks, which are full of energy, aggression and just straight up viciousness  which will leave any death metal fan satisfied.
