DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Endeavour
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Endeavour sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
Gijs, Vocals: I chose Sleep Token’s 'Sundowning'. This album has it all: Poppy songs, heavy songs, vibey songs, it’s the last album that would bore me. If their new record would have been out (tomorrow at time of writing) I’d pick that one though.
Rob, Lead guitar: 'Lost Forever // Lost Together' by Architects because every single song is an absolute bop.
Teun, Drums: 'The difference between hell and home". I always come back to this one no matter how long it’s been. The raw sound and feel of Counterparts in this era is something magical to me and would make staying at a deserted island way more enjoyable.
Jan, Bass: 'Amperland, NY' by Pinegrove. It’s the perfect blend between country-esque harmony, instrumentation, musical form, often without structure, no chorus or verse, and midwest emo sound.
Anthony, Rhythm Guitar: That would be 'Sundowning' by Sleep Token for sure! The diversity of sounds on this album was such a big inspiration to me. I keep going back to this one and it is definitely up there with 'Mesmer' by Northlane as the most impactful albums to me personally.
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
Gijs: Woah that’s a hard one, I don’t really pay much attention to album covers, but I really like clean and simple album covers, like 'That’s the Spirit' by Bring Me The Horizon.
Rob: Probably ‘Waiting for Morning to Come’ by Being As An Ocean. There’s something very serene about traffic lights during a cold, dark night. Besides it being very poetic, it would remind me of the fact that I don’t have to wait for traffic lights to turn green even though there’s no one on the road anymore - because I’m on an Island.
Teun: The album 'Flower Boy' by Tyler the creator. The colours and stories of the album have really changed my idea of hip hop and in which different ways an album can be perceived as art. To have that cover lighten up my days doesn’t sound so bad.
Jan: I like 'Union Black' by Skindred. Cool golden lion with manes of all kinds of things, contrasted by black.
Anthony: Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures' album cover is really aesthetically pleasing to me. I'd go with this one!
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
Gijs: Probably a Weizen beer like Wiehenstephaner. I prefer darker, stronger beers but I’d hate to have that as the only drink for the rest of my stay haha.
Rob: Water. Stay hydrated.
Teun: Fresh clean water, I don’t need much but I love me some water. I could always spice it up with some fruits from the island.
Jan: Oedipus Mannenliefde.
Anthony: I'll go with the most boring answer possible as well: water.
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
Gijs: I hate to say this but my band merch wearing days are kind of over. I used to have a shirt from Twelve Foot Ninja that I really liked, so probably that one if I had to pick.
Rob: A Being As An Ocean sweater I’ve had for nearly ten years.
Teun: A hoodie from Mac miller’s swimming album.
Jan: My Daddy Unchained shirt.
Anthony: The only right answer would be my Trust Us We're Liars shirt. Shoutout to the boys!
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
Gijs: My girlfriend of course!
Rob: My lovely girlfriend.
Teun: My cat. Epic shipwreck survival stories guaranteed!
Jan: (My bandmates) + the whole friend group around it.
Anthony: My girlfriend.
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
Gijs: Oof that’s a hard one, but if I had to pick the one that I have listened to/watched the most, it’s Slipknot’s “Disasterpieces'. Iconic.
Rob: The Casey farewell tour show in ‘Dynamo’, Eindhoven (They’re back together now though haha).
Teun: Counterparts' performance of their album Tragedy Will Find Us. The drum video’s by Drummers Anonymous on YouTube are insane and have given me so much value footage of one of the sickest metal drummers in my opinion.
Jan: Vulfpeck Live at Ancienne Belgique.
Anthony: Northlane - Live at the Roundhouse.
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
Gijs: Corey Taylor, he’s got the resources and he seems like a great dude.
Rob: The Baywatch cast.
Teun: Definitely Dave Grohl. I mean, the man has got some serious money and media contacts. If he hears about a musician that’s into heavy music surviving on an island with his cat, he would definitely try to help me get back to solid land. I have faith in Mr. Grohl.
Jan: Vincent Kuijpers of Zjwieg.
Anthony: Rob (even though he's on the island with me), because he obviously has the best plan in place out of all of us.
You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
Gijs: Jan is the biggest. Not implying anything…
Rob: Jan, because he is very tall so we would be able to survive for at least another year.
Teun: Jan. tallest band member, food supply for years. Sorry Jan :(.
Jan: Rob.
Anthony: Democracy has spoken. We'll have to let our giant die.
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
Gijs: This one is gonna seem out of the blue, but Michael Jackson. He is the reason I wanted to sing and perform in the first place.
Rob: Tom Searle, the GOAT (RIP).
Teun: Mac Miller.
Jan: Jack Black.
Anthony: Marcus Bridge from Northlane.
