Album Review: Tortured – Genetically Engineered Monstrosity
Reviewed by Dan Phipps
Rounding up death metal musicians from Spain, France & Russia who between them have a very impressive selection of work within the death metal genre, Tortured continue a very strong 2023 showcasing from US brutal death metal powerhouse label Comatose. The band are embarking on the release of their first full length record Genetically Engineered Monstrosity.
Genetically Engineered Monstrosity as its name may suggest is not for the faint of heart and really leaves the starting gate in furious fashion. With its opening track the four piece band begins the assault on your audio senses and they do not look back. Tortured create their brand of death metal firstly on a selection of utterly vicious riffs combining speed and ferocious technicality as they craft 9 swift tracks which even in their swift form do not cheat you when it comes to what they offer.
To accompany the guitars, razor tight drums and wretched guttural vocals which when mixed together create a severe brand of brutality perfect for fans of the cream of the crop of brutal death metal acts like Disgorge, Gorgasm & Deeds of Flesh. Early into the run length of the record Tortured ensures that you are greeted with only the most punishing bombardment of music, with the speed only being let up to provide you with a set of insanely nasty groove, and it’s a theme that continues throughout the record, it really has the mixture of these elements on point. The music is accompanied by a set of phenomenal vocals which match the music's mix of ferocity and groove when they are deployed.
Tortured gives you a real primitive dose of real and honest brutal death metal. It’s got a very honest traditional sound and does not hold back for a second with giving you a dose of absolute fury.
