DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Leaf

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Leaf

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Leaf sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Colin – AC/DC, Highway to Hell. My first proper purchase and still the best guitar tone ever. I adore Bon Scott’s voice, lyrics and snarl.

Jarad – Ace of Spades. Lemmy is an absolute God, listen to the rawness and the attitude. Yeah!

Mark – AC/DC, Back in Black because it was THE album that really set me on the path of rock music.

Daz – Radiohead, The Bends, to chill everyone out when we're getting on each other's tits.

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

Colin - Kiss - Alive. Kiss looking cool and pulling some serious cool rocker poses. They didn’t have quite the same flexibility last time I saw them in 2019.

Jarad – Killers by Iron Maiden. Punky and nasty and sums up the mid Thatcher angst. Eddie looks cool as milk.

Mark – Killers by Iron Maiden. Oh Jarad, has picked that. Oi, did you see me writing it down you cheating swine?

Daz - Never Mind The Bollocks, Sex Pistols, controversial at the time and a middle finger the establishment.

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

Colin – Cheap, fresh red wine from Northern Italy. £1 a litre in plastic bottles, you can drink it all day, no headache and tastes better than all this posh nonsense. Hey, hang on a min if they can keep it stocked then there must be delivery boats? I get bored VERY easily.

Jarad – Beeble, yummy, tasty head-mashing goodness. Slips down nice and easy, like a bollock on a razor blade.

Mark - Pop. I am too unstable for alcohol.

Daz - Stella (not too many though, you don't want to see that). No, you don’t (Colin).

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

Colin – One of those limited editions ‘played by the man’ Paul Stanley guitars that you can buy at Kiss gigs. Better than any crappy cap or T-shirt.

Jarad – Therapy? Cap. Need that when the sun is out, assuming that this island is nice and warm? Anderson will have to sit under his ‘guitar’ in the blazing sunshine.

Mark - Van Halen T Shirt from Donington 84. Still got it, bit tight, and threadbare in places, but the memories it conjures up are electric.

Daz - American Head Charge The War Of Art t shirt (though black isn't too clever in the sun).

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

Colin – Iggy Pop. He would have stores to tell for an eternity and I could write some tunes with him on that ‘useless’ guitar, eh Jarad?

Jarad – A barmaid. Sorry, female barperson. Not pouring my own Beeble, I will be soaking up too many rays.

Mark - Sofia Vergara. She isn’t some dim-witted pumped up 20-year-old with no conversation. I would just stare, while she talked.

Daz - My wife Tracy of course (in case she reads this, besides, I think Salma Hayek would be too high maintenance).

DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Leaf

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Colin – Riskee and the Ridicule supporting The King Blues in Wolverhampton about 8 years ago. OMG, if you haven’t seen them, go and do it. Intense and tuneful – Scott is a terrifyingly great frontman.

Jarad – Live After Death, Maiden. All the best tunes played with the best line-up.

Mark - Van Halen Donington 84. It made a huge impact on me and I really loved DLR’s excellent trousers.

Daz - Donnington 88, stands out for good and bad reasons. No, I will not divulge…for reasons already stated.

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

Colin – Andrew Groves of Arcane Roots. Anyone who can play guitar like he does, whilst singing and playing weird keyboards with his feet will be able to work out a rescue attempt using only fundamental particles.

Jarad – Big Daz. He is a practical and clever engineer type bloke.

Mark - I would send a message to each of the members of Leaf UK so that should cover all my bases.

Daz - Bruce Dickinson could fly a sea plane (he's gonna be happy when he sees the posters from the others).

You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

Colin – Jarad. I would imagine he would taste like belly pork. Yummy.

Jarad – Big Daz. He is a practical and clever engineer type bloke, but he has very long legs and probably the highest meat content. Colin would be like a chicken wing.

Mark – Daz. Are you looking over my shoulder again Jarad?

Daz - Jarad, simply because we'll get more steaks off him.

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

Colin – Bon Scott. Gravel, grit, cool lyrics and terrible trousers. Magical.

Jarad - Lemmy, easy. He is (was) the ultimate rocker.

Mark - Dave Grohl. The guy is a legend and seems like he has remained humble and down to earth.

Daz - Chester Bennington (if he was still with us), love the raw emotion and honesty in his lyrics.
