Bloodstock Bound: To Obey A Tyrant
As Bloodstock gets closer, we delve deep into the line up to find out more about some of the bands playing the New Blood and Jägermeister stages at this years event.
Today we chat with To Obey A Tyrant!
The Razor's Edge: Please introduce yourself and your band mates.
To Obey A Tyrant: Yo! We are To Obey A Tyrant, a cacophony of heavy riffs, crushing blast beats, and unrelentingly savage vocals. We're a five piece consisting of our front man Brandon on vocals, Josh and James on guitars, Harvey on bass, and myself (Bruno) on drums.
The Razor's Edge: How would you describe your style of metal?
To Obey A Tyrant: Initially we started off as a pretty typical deathcore band with infleunces of slam sprinkled in, however nowadays we've leaned quite heavily towards the blackened side of things with influences from the Behemoth, Dimmu Borgir, and Belphegor sound. Regardless, we still like to keep the brutality of deathcore and slam alive in our music.
The Razor's Edge: How did you land your spot on the Bloodstock bill?
To Obey A Tyrant: We competed in the local Metal to the Masses event going on in our home town of Bournemouth, it's something that's always come up every year, but this has been the first time we'd felt fully confident in taking on the competition.
The Razor's Edge: How tough was this years competition?
To Obey A Tyrant: Some of the later stages of M2TM was really challenging, there were loads of insane bands which all absolutely killed it. It became super apparent that which ever band won the competition would have been more than qualified to put on a good show for the people of Bloodstock.
The Razor's Edge: What does playing at Bloodstock mean to you?
To Obey A Tyrant: We've always seen Bloodstock as one of the main pillars of the UK metal festival scene, and personally has always been right at the top of our bucket list of shows to play. On top of having this platform to expose our music to a much wider range of listeners, it's also quite sentimental for us to simply have our name on the same poster as some huge artists which we all listen to in our free time.
The Razor's Edge: For people who’ve never seen you live, what can they expect at Bloodstock?
To Obey A Tyrant: For anyone who catches our set, you can expect to see tight jeans, bald heads, long hair and an array of extreme, relentless vocals bound in heavy down tuned guitars and devastatingly crushing drums. We urge all deathcore/death metal fans to check us out as there aren't that many DC acts this year.
The Razor's Edge: What day are you performing?
To Obey A Tyrant: You can catch us on the New Blood stage on the Friday 11th.
The Razor's Edge: What other bands are you looking forward to watching at Bloodstock this year?
To Obey A Tyrant: Aside from playing the festival, we're all really looking forward to catching Killswitch, Meshuggah, Knocked Loose and Decapitated as well as some bands which are harder to see live in the UK like Gaerea and Gutulax.
The Razor's Edge: Playing the New Blood Stage is just the first steppingstone in a bands journey. What’s next in your plans for world domination?
To Obey A Tyrant: We've definitely got a lot going on behind the scenes currently which I won't go into too much detail about, however I will say that with how busy we've been this year with shows, then playing Bloodstock in August, we intend to keep this wave of momentum flowing hard.
The Razor's Edge: Are you camping with the fans? Which campsite are you heading for?
To Obey A Tyrant: We always like to appreciate the best of both worlds with these events and make a little trip out of it if we can, so we will be in standard camping this year so we can chill with our friends over the weekend after our set.
The Razor's Edge: You’ve gotta keep hydrated at Bloodstock, what is your drink of choice for the weekend?
To Obey A Tyrant: Most of us are beer drinkers, my personal go to for festivals would be the king of beer, Budweiser, apart from Josh who is strictly a Kraken drinker.
