EP Review: Going Off - Kill List
Reviewed by Daniel Phipps
It's been a busy twelve months for Manchester hardcore band Going Off. Back in February they released their full length record on Church Road Records which was a solid well crafted slab of UKHC. Following a very busy summer of live shows the band started showcasing a glimpse of what the future holds, releasing a couple of singles prior to the bands tour alongside Employed to Serve and Pupil Slicer. Kill List is a culmination of the singles that the band have started releasing and will see them end 2023 exactly how they came into it with the release of new material.
With its eight tracks, clocking in at the average length of half an Opeth track, what's really apparent with the Kill List is that Going Off really dialled up the heavy on these tracks whilst ensuring that the bands own historic direction is not compromised. A really positive part of this collection of tracks is that coming just ten months since the release of the bands debut full length that they do not sound like tracks that didn't make the cut in fact they remind me more of the bands Destroy EP than the full length as they are short, sharp blasts of fury.
The sound of this collection of singles has a really solid production behind it, keeping with its raw hardcore energy and bringing in a slightly but not overly polished metal sound which really brings out the heavier sound of the tracks. As with the full length the vocal performance on these tracks is top notch and you really feel the passion within them. One of the bands best points in their music is how they switch from a classic hardcore punk vibe into a more mosh heavy sound quickly and effortlessly, it's not forced it just flows really nicely.
Going off, finish off a very successful 2023 with a solid new collection of tracks certain to cause dancefloors to erupt.
