DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Slump

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Slump

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Slump sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Ben: I'd want to take something interesting, but it's probably gonna be Pink Floyd or something like that.

Kabu: I think I'd choose Wretch by Kyuss. I think the sound was very innovative back then, and it really gets me going. It makes feel passionate.

Ben: I'd wanna say something more original, but I'd probably just take The Wall. I'd take the Downward Spiral by Nine Inch Nails, but I'd probably be depressed enough about being on an island.

Matt: I'm going for Leviathan by Mastodon because it's got a whale on it, and we're shipwrecked.

Kabu: The whale’s not gonna help you.

Matt: Yeah, but it's also a great album.

Ben: That is a more interesting answer.

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

Ben: My first thought was Around the Fur. Don't actually put that.

Matt: Enema of the State was also my first thought.

Kabu: I would like to have the Queens of the Stone Age self titled album.

Ben: Is that the one with the man in women’s underwear?

Kabu: It's better than nothing. My second choice would be Elephant Tree’s self titled. I looked at that album cover once and the jellyfish was coming out at me.

Matt: I've always liked Purple by Baroness.

Ben: That's got nudity on it, hasn't it?

Matt: Yeah, but I really like all the purple and the design of it.

Ben: Maybe Blackwater Park. I've always liked atmospheric, spooky things.

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

Kabu: JD. Or beer. Or both.

Matt: They said one.

Kabu: Beer, because you can always drink it when it's hot.

Ben: You can drink JD when it's hot.

Kabu: Yeah, but JD heats you up when it's too warm.

Matt: Dark rum and ginger beer. I'm hoping it's a tropical island.

Ben: It would be rum and coke for me.

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

Kabu: What's happening, dude?

Ben: I really like my Conjurer shirt, with the flowers and the skulls.

Matt: I've got this blue Boss Keloid shirt with an axolotl on it that I've always really liked.

Kabu: I would take my black Verminthrone tshirt. The front has a dead goat, which I think looks really cool.

Matt: Fair enough.

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

Kabu: I'd probably like to be alone, because I'd end up hating anyone. Actually, I'd choose my girlfriend, because she's probably gonna read this.

Matt: I'm going for Bear Grylls because I'm not very good at practical survival things.

Ben: Probably Richard Ayoade, because he'd be very funny.

Slump

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Kabu: Probably AC/DC, they were my first gig when I was 18. I got to see Angus Young from the front row. They're not my favourite band, but it was amazing.

Matt: Again, not my favourite band, but I'm going for Slipknot at Download 2013. It was my first festival and they just blew my mind, shortly before Joey left.

Ben: It's a bit of a wildcard, but Bruno Mars at the Superbowl half time show. He plays drums at the start and he's way better than you'd expect him to be.

Kabu: He's actually an amazing musician.

Matt: I saw a Bruno Mars tribute when I was working behind a bar in Stafford once and the tunes were amazing.

Ben: He's just so good.

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

Matt: I'm writing, ‘Please rescue me’ on my message.

Kabu: Why would you do that?

Ben: I'm going for a super funny answer that no one has ever said before, which is Sting.

Kabu: *starts singing Roxanne*

You've been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

Ben: Are you kidding me?

Kabu: I think Matt because he's biggest and has the most meat to offer.

Matt: Fair enough.

Ben: I'd probably give up first.

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

Kabu: It's definitely Dave Grohl.

Ben: I was also about to say Dave Grohl.

Matt: I'm going for Tony Iommi for making the best out of a bad situation when he was younger. Laughing in the face of adversity and that.

Ben: Dave Grohl seems like a cool guy, he's got big dad energy.

Kabu: Grohl made me find the passion to play drums.

Matt: He was definitely my hero once upon a time.
