Bloodstock Bound: Crowley
As Bloodstock gets closer, we delve deep into the line up to find out more about some of the bands playing the New Blood and EMP stages at this years event.
Today we chat with Crowley
The Razor's Edge: Please introduce yourself and your band mates.
Crowley: We’re CROWLEY – with Lidya Balaban on vocals, Eliza Lee on lead guitar, Ruth Cranston on rhythm guitar, Kim Fellows on bass and Sav Montore on drums.
The Razor's Edge: How would you describe your sound?
Crowley: It’s heavy, seventies-inspired occult rock. There’s some doom, a bit of goth – a new take on retro-pagan rock. Riff-based with some screams. We’re huge fans of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Fleetwood Mac, along with some more heavy stuff and some goth influences too – they’ve all kind of combined to create our own style.
The Razor's Edge: How did you land your spot on the Bloodstock bill?
Crowley: We just reached out and pitched ourselves - It was honestly a bit of a gamble but we thought the worst they would say is no!
The Razor's Edge: What does playing at Bloodstock mean to you?
Crowley: We all bought tickets to go this year already, so to be actually playing there is pretty awesome! It’s no doubt the best metal festival in the UK and to be in a line-up with Green Lung, Beast in Black, Amon Amarth, Carcass and Opeth is really cool. It’s honestly been a bucket-list festival for all of us during our gigging careers so excited is an understatement.
The Razor's Edge: For people who’ve never seen you live, what can they expect at Bloodstock?
Crowley: Expect classic rock roots, doom-laden riffs, a bit of goth, pagan themes, massive shoes, lots of velvet and BIG sleeves. For fans of Green Lung, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Led Zeppelin, Halestorm and Fleetwood Mac.
The Razor's Edge: What day are you performing?
Crowley: We’re on the EMP stage at 4.50-5.20 – see you there!
The Razor's Edge: What other bands are you looking forward to watching at Bloodstock this year?
Crowley: We’re huge fans of Green Lung so can’t wait to watch those guys again, Korpiklanni are excellent and we’re super excited to cut some shapes to Beast in Black!
The Razor's Edge: Playing the New Blood Stage is just the first steppingstone in a bands journey. What’s next in your plans for world domination?
Crowley: We’re pushing forward to an EP release followed up with a full-length album. We’re huge fans of vinyl so aiming to get the album in vinyl format. We can’t divulge details (yet!) but we’ve also got a jaunt to “the continent” coming up soon. Really, it feels like we are just getting started – this is our first full festival cycle together as a line-up and to have Bloodstock amongst that is something pretty awesome! Getting more involved in the metal scene feels like the right move for us so more heavy festivals and shows to come!
The Razor's Edge: Are you camping with the fans? Which campsite are you heading for?
Crowley: Definitely - we don’t want to miss bin jousting! We’re heading for the insanity of Midgard. If you see us – call round for a drink.
The Razor's Edge: It’s festival weekend, what’s your food vendor of choice on site?
Crowley: Mad for a big Yorkshire pudding – but apparently they poisoned everyone at Download so we’ll see!
