DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Gwailo
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Gwailo sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
David - I would have to go with Guns N Roses Appetite For Destruction. It was the first Rock album I had ever heard back when I was 8 or 9 years old, and it got me hooked on Guns N Roses and on Rock N Roll music so I couldn't live without that one.
Kyle - Airbourne, Black Dog Barking.
Michael - Fall out Boy - Save Rock and Roll. t's a brilliant and diverse album. It has songs for if you want to party, feel hopeful, feel angry or feel sad. It also came out around while I was at university, so it has a special place in my heart haha.
Adrian - Scorpions Crazy World. It was the first album I took from my father's record collection when I was a kid and I used to play along to the drums using pencils.
Steve - Morning glory by oasis because it's literally full of summer bangers for when I'm chilling on my island sipping coconuts. And absolutely "avving it"
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
David - Lots to choose from but I like the Slash Apocalyptic Love album cover. It's just so cool with the heaven and hell scene it will never get old.
Adrian - When I was a kid I would take my dad's tapes choosing them by the most interesting album covers but having no idea about what the music was and the one that always caught my attention was Virtual X by Iron Maiden.
Michael - Probably Queen - Made in Heaven. The album itself isn't necessarily my favourite of theirs, nor is it their most popular. But to me that image of Freddies pose with his fist in the air has always been inspiring and hopeful to me.
Kyle - Rival sons, feral roots, as it’s a great piece of artwork with so much going on in it you can admire it whilst listening to the album.
Steve - Anything with boobies in it.
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
David - I'm going to go with a long island iced tea. It's got everything you could want mixed in and it tastes good. Pretty strong too so it will help you relax on Devil's Island.
Kyle - As they probably don’t have good Guinness on hand, I’d have to go with the local drop or tropical daiquiri.
Michael - Double Whiskey and Pepsi Max.
Adrian - Vodka and tonic.
Steve - Red stripe. In a can. Pure indie rock and roll-style.
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
David - I would save Gwailo’s very own Dual Lighter/bottle opener. You could probably do just about anything with that combo on a desert island.
Michael - A Tenacious D cum rag. Cause if you're not busy trying to survive, what else are you going to do when you're alone at night on “Devil's island”. Only the Lord of the Flies is watching.
Kyle - I would take the band's logo stickers and just put them everywhere possible for exposure and make sure the next people to be shipwrecked on the island know what band they should be checking out when they are rescued. Probably starting off with our new single, “R’N’R Seduction”.
Adrian - I'd take a Motorhead baseball cap because I always wear one when on stage.
Steve - Lighters for making fire. (And opening bottles of beer) which are obviously in abundance on a desert island.
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
David - Captain Jack Sparrow has got himself off a few desert islands in his time so I'm sure he would be a good help.
Kyle - It would be decent to be shipwrecked with Robson Green so we could participate in some extreme fishing.
Michael - Ideally it would be great to be shipwrecked with a shipwright or carpenter of some kind.
Adrian - I think a wise choice would be Bear Grylls. You'd be sorted for food and shelter with him around.
Steve - David, because he's absolutely hench and he can bend palm trees over and probably lift rocks and logs like Arnie.
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
David - Guns N Roses Use Your Illusion tour. I wouldn't get sick of listening to them play.
Michael - Probably Patent Pending at the Newcastle O2 back in the days when they had the smaller stage upstairs. I think it was 2013.
It might seem like an odd choice, but it was one of the most energetic live shows I've ever been to!
Kyle - I would have the AC/DC when they played river plate, Argentina it was recorded, and I always listen to it. Great music and a great crowd.
Adrian - I would go with The Big 4 tour. It had four amazing metal bands in one place and such high-quality music you can't go wrong.
Steve - Oasis. Knebworth. 1996.
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
We thought long and hard and our best chance would be with Bruce Dickinson picking us up in the Iron Maiden jet. We have no problem with us all getting on that and we'll be taking the island bar with us.
You've been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
We will have to kill David. He’s the biggest one of us so we will have plenty to go around and with the spare drinks at the bar once he's gone, we can have the right party.
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
David - I would have saved Slash. The music he wrote with Guns N Roses and other projects has put me on a path that has led me here talking about my own music and being in my own band.
Kyle - I would save Joel O’Keefe from Airbourne because he is the frontman and main guitar hero from a new upcoming band when I was growing up which gave great inspiration that new rock n roll could be forged. He would also be a great person to be shipwrecked as he’d be a brilliant character and pass the time with a beer in hand.
Michael - It would have to be Freddie Mercury. To me he is the greatest singer and frontman to have ever lived. He is definitely my greatest inspiration in music and a carefree lifestyle that it is my goal to match up to someday. If I had to pick a living artist, I'd probably say Brendon Urie or Dan Avidan.
Adrian - It would be Lars Ulrich, he was the drummer that really inspired me to pick up the sticks and start playing.
Steve - Dee Dee Ramone.
