DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Rockabye Reaper

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Rockabye Reaper

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Rockabye Reaper sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Keeley – My album of choice would be Damnation by Opeth. It’s one of the few albums I can always return to and never get sick of hearing.

Dafydd – Back in Black, ACDC. Easily the best rock album ever written and I will stand by that statement and the coconut tree on my island.

Shaun – October Rust by Type O Negative. Hopefully someone sailing by will hear it and stop to find out what that awesome music is and I can hijack their boat.

Dan – Slip of the tongue by Whitesnake so that some Sailing ships will pass us by

Matt – I think if I knew I was being shipwrecked, then getting off the ship safely would be a priority however, a handful of cd’s would be the goal. So I have more of a choice than the other guys lol. Hoping that my Black Sabbath box set was in the mix, just because it means I can headbang and pass the time to the epic tracks they had written which has influenced me towards my style of playing.

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

Keeley - That’s a difficult question. Off the top of my head I think the artwork for Prequelle by Ghost is pretty interesting to look at. However I may well regret having to wake up to it every morning.

Daf - Back in Black" by ACDC - in my opinion, the best rock and roll album to exist - it'll give me hope that one day I can hold that CD again!

Shaun - “Help!” by the Beatles so it can have a dual purpose as a distress flag.

Dan -  Yours truly by Ariana Grande so I can at least see one pretty face when stranded with this lot!!!

Matt – Compilation of rubbish television shows, so it would remind me of some of the crap shown on tv at home so I don’t miss it as much. Suddenly the island wouldn’t be so bad.

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

Keeley - Probably a Pina Colada. Or if they serve tea, even better.

Daf - Disaronno and coke - it was my late best-friend's favourite drink.

Shaun - Vodka Lemonade is always the drink of choice on sunny days.

Dan -  Pinacoladas served in coconuts so it can at least seem like a holiday

Matt – Indian Pale Ale, they come as a pint so I can save my energy rather than walking to the bar all the time.

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

Keeley - Probably my Opeth - Damnation t-shirt purely because it’s the comfiest piece of merch I own.

Daf - A band that sells bucket hats - this five-head will 100% burn without it.

Shaun - whichever band does sunglasses i guess! The slightest bit of sun and I’m squinting.

Dan - whatever band has an official lifeboat merch drop, probably Metallica or something!

Matt – Any band that has their own slippers, so I can at least be comfortable.

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

Keeley - Literally any other four people.

Daf - Gordan Ramsey - would love to try his palm-leaf stew and hear him call me the "Island idiot" when I drop it.

Shaun - Bear Grylls or Ed Stafford of course.

Dan - 12 golden retrievers and Aquaman

Matt – My partner Laura, as I wouldn’t ever want to cosy up to the rest of the guys in the band. That would be weird, we're close but not that close lol.

Devil's Island featuring Rockabye Reaper

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Keeley - Probably the time I saw Ghost play in Cardiff back in 2019.

Daf - ACDC at Wembley in 2018... my first time seeing my heroes and reminding myself that tears of joy exist as well.

Shaun - Slipknot at Download 2019 when I broke my ribs in the pit - just to remind me that things can be more painful than being marooned on a desert island.

Dan - Being me the Horizon playing in Cardiff, it was amazing to attend and it would be great to relive

Matt – Dio at Monsters of Rock, just because it was an epic gig.

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

Keeley - Well it would have to be Sting (The Police) for obvious reasons.

Daf - Dave Grohl - I can just imagine him having the best entrance onto the island and I can imagine him giving the best "you're finally saved and you're going home" hug

Shaun - I’d send a message to Daron from SOAD saying Serj is marooned with me and has agreed to make a new System record if he rescues us. Daron would be there in a flash.

Dan - It would be to Lionel Richie as he would search All Night long (all night) for us

Matt – Bruce Dickinson because at least he has a pilot’s licence and could fly us the hell out of there.

You've been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

Keeley - I feel like it’s only fair that the oldest member should take one for the team. Sorry Matt.

Daf - I mean, I technically only need one leg, right...?

Shaun - I’d like to say I’d sacrifice myself but I’m far too selfish for that. Whoever is looking like the easiest target is going to be dinner.

Dan -  I’d sacrifice myself, bassists are 2 to the pound and I believe I’d be the most tasty for the others, plus it would get me off that island quickly so I’d be happy

Matt – All of them as Keeley chose me so only fair I choose her, Daf won’t be able to run with one leg, Shaun and Dan basically nominated themselves. Plus I wouldn’t go hungry for a while.

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

Keeley - This is a very difficult question for me. I enjoy a lot of different genres of music and there’s no single person that has influenced me more than anyone else if I’m being honest. If I had to choose, I would probably save Jonathan Davis from Korn. That band got me through some of the most difficult times of my life.

Daf - Angus Young. That man is 69 years old and still running around like a headless chicken on the world's biggest stages. He got me into rock, he got me into playing the guitar, and we even named our dog Angus because of him. Absolute walking legend.

Shaun - Peter Steele for sure. Not only my biggest influence, but he also always had a bottle of wine to hand so sharing that would make desert island life a bit easier.

Dan - Alex the Terrible from Slaughter to Prevail… not because of the influence thing but just because if there’s bears on the island we need someone who can fight them off and scream loud enough for neighbouring continents to hear!

Matt – Joey Jordison, basically his style and technical playing on the drums has always intrigued me, influenced some of the things I can perform myself these days.
