DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Vesseles
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Vesseles sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
Let’s say we were lost at sea for far too long and I ended up consuming my bandmates for survival so… it’s just me, Valira, the demon.
As for that album, it’s unquestionably The Open Door by Evanescence. It’s the whole I reason I even started writing music and a major influence on my style.
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
I’d put up Datalysium by The Zenith Passage. Not only is this a wonderful piece of art and a great album, I actually have one up over my bed at home so it’d be a nice familiar comfort.
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
I’ve been on a bit of wine hype lately so I’d have to say Apothic’s red blend. Not only does it pair well with foods and taste damn good on its own, it also will help me get sleepy if I’m struggling to fall asleep on this damn island. I mean, I’m sure my mental state will catch up with me eventually as time blends into a seemingly endless nothingness so…that’s when the wine comes in to help me escape into dreamland.
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
I’d certainly pick the halloween edition shirt from Cattle Decapitation that came out last year. It’s got the logo on the front and a vomiting pumpkin on the back but most importantly, it glows in the dark! Talk about the perfect item to have on those lonely pitch black nights. At least there’s some joy that reminds me of those glowing stars I used to put on my ceiling.
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
Well…um…considering they’re gone…I’m more so in a place of loneliness so really having them here wouldn’t be that bad. We would either bond or come out of it hating each other but it’d still be nice to have them here.
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
Evanescence, Cologne, 2003. That fucking show. I used to have that video downloaded on my Zune and would watch it all the time. The level of passion, pain, heaviness, everything in that show still resonates with me and gives me chills. Now I need to go watch it again.
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
I’m not sure why Travis Ryan from Cattle Decapitation keeps coming to mind but I think it’s just how insane that guy is on stage. I feel like someone with that level of an animalistic performance could do anything.
You've been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
Hm, I may have to get creative here. I’m assuming no one is manning that bar. Time to build an effigy of each member to hopefully reincarnate them both and sacrifice them again.
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
This all comes back to Evanescence so it’s certainly Amy Lee.
Thanks for your time. We hope you get back to dry land before you're next due out on tour!
I just hope I’m able to reincarnate my bandmates…again.
