DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Paradis

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Paradis

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Paradis sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Jonny: These days I am definitely going with The Black by Imminence, I was blown away when I first heard them, and their new album is an absolute beast.

Pedro: The Stage by Avenged Sevenfold (it’s a masterpiece)

Fred: So What by While She Sleeps. It is a very intuitive and creative album and the lyrics are pure gold.

Mark: Death - The sound of perseverance
This album truly is a wonder of musical technicality and emotion. This album was my introduction to DEATH and made me fall in love with Chuck's song writing.

Flynn: As of more recently It'd "Witness" by VOLA, much like other bands playing more pop-informed djent, VOLA strike a fantastic balance between chunky riffs and Asger Mygind's smooth baritone vocals

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

Jonny: The Poison by Bullet for my Valentine, takes me back to being a teenager again
Pedro: Phobia - Breaking Benjamin, probably the first album artwork that really stuck with me
Fred: Empyrean cover it's an insane piece of art, it looks like an AI would have done it but it was in the 2010s so the artist really made a fantastic concept
Mark: Mastodon - Hunter
It's bold, and striking. Style reminds me of something Alexander Rodchenko would have designed.
Flynn: Chickenfoot 1 had a heat-sensitive album cover that revealed the band members and track listing. That was pretty neat.

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

Jonny: Beer is beer and it's fun.
Pedro: Water, because one of us has to be sensible
Fred: I like Moscow Mule as it's the right balance between zesty and alcoholic
Mark: What Jonny said
Flynn: Non-alcoholic? Cloudy apple juice. Alcoholic? Hog's Back TEA

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

Jonny: I'd say my Ice Nine Kills vest
Pedro: Polyphia hoodie (it fucks hard)
Fred: Hoodies are like a large canvas and with the right artwork or logo they look just sick
Mark: My Opeth t shirt, gotta stay with a classic
Flynn: My 'Jesus probably wasn't that bad" t shirt from the guys in Raised by Owls

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

Jonny: Sam Carter so I can spend weeks having a BLEGH off

Pedro: The Rev, he seemed a fun guy and could hunt ducks. He’s also a knife master

Fred: I would be stuck with Corey Taylor, because I have an eternity of questions that he has to answer

Mark: Dio as he was a good storyteller and a nice guy I would imagine.

Flynn: Varg Vikernes so I can drive him insane by being the antithesis of his philosophy at every stage

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Paradis

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Jonny: Alter Bridge at the Royal Albert Hall in 2017, they played a three hour set with a frickin Orchestra behind them!

Pedro: Electric Callboy at Hammersmith Apollo in 2022, it was just one huge rave

Fred: Best live shows to me was the Bologna festival in 2017 having a fantastic line with "Protest The Hero", "Opeth", "Alter Bridge" and "Iron Maiden"

Mark: Rammstein - amazing show , fireworks , costumes, simple but effective music and penis shaped cannon that shoots foam into the crowd. What's not to like about them?

Flynn: Skindred at Bloodstock 2017. First time I saw them and it was EPIC

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

After a lengthy discussion we decided on Brice Dickinson, why wouldn't you want to be rescued by a pilot and a metal legend?

You've been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

Flynn nominated himself as he is an absolute hero and we should all pay our respects to our beast of a drummer!

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

Jonny: From a vocal perspective, M Shadows has been a favourite since I first started listening to metal, I have a million questions to ask

Pedro: Synyster Gates, GOATED guitar player + his hair

Fred: My favourite musician is Plini as he isn't just a guitar player but a real complete musician and composer

Mark: Ritchie Blackmore - My rock journey started from listening to Deep Purple and Rainbow. Mr.Blackmore can play you anything. Heavy riffs , fast solos , classical melodies , calming and charming ballads and being able to make his instrument sing for him.

Flynn: Gene Hoglan. Dude's a machine and an inspiration to extreme metal drummers everywhere.
