DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Steal The City

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Steal The City

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Steal The City sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Ellis - For me , it's got to be Immersion by Pendulum - it's got everything, and 2 tracks called The Island pt. 1 and 2!

Smit - American Idiot by  Green Day, so much nostalgia for me and just one of those albums I can never get bored of, plus I love a good concept album!

James - There’s so many to choose from but the Resistance album by Muse is an album I can have on repeat and listen to over and over again!

Chuggy - The Poison by Bullet For My Valentine. This album was my childhood and its metalcore royalty in an album for god sake! The riffs and angst had me hooked from the first time I listened to it and I still get that same joy now. It’s a belter of a record!

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

James - It has to be Motley Crue’s Dr Feelgood album as that’s the sound track for my teens! The album artwork also inspired one of my main tattoos on my forearm!

Ellis - For me that album cover would be Homesick by A Day To Remember. Appropriately titled, and a design you can really get lost in, not to mention the nostalgia it brings!

Smit - I was going to say homesick by a Day to Remember but Ellis already beat me to it. So I’m going to say All Killer No Filler by Sum 41. I just think it’s hilarious, a good reminder to not take anything, or yourself, too seriously.

Chuggy – Probably In Waves by Trivium. It was my first proper heavy album that I loved. I know I mentioned The Poison by BFMV earlier, but this album opened the door to all the really heavy bands. The cover to me resembles the calm before the storm. Thinking about it now, probably not ideal being stuck on an island!

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

James - Bahama Mama cocktail!!!

Chuggy – Kraken and Coke for me! BEAUTIFUL

Ellis - JD and coke would be my preference, but assuming there is no mixer option, I would stick with a nice lager to stay suitably drunk for the duration of my marooning!

Smit - Kraken and Coke on ice!

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

Chuggy - There's one shirt that I’ve had for years and I refuse to get rid of it because it's simple, to the point and very self explanatory. Its my August Burns Red shirt and it simply says on the back in massive writing ‘ANGRY MUSIC FOR HAPPY PEOPLE’

Smit - While She Sleeps hoodie. Warm and a great logo.

James - Motley crues ‘final’ tour tshirt as the design is great and looks banging!

Ellis - Unfortunately we are no Iron Maiden, so a STC-themed plane is off the menu. Instead, I would go for one of our STC hoodies - good for all weathers, and they look pretty cool if I do say so myself!

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

Smit - Other than my partner, I honestly don’t think I could think of anyone else who I would rather be shipwrecked with. It would turn a potential disaster into a huge laugh.

James - Apart from my wife and Pets, I don’t think there’s anyone. Each band member has certain skills that could make it easier to survive!

Ellis - Honestly, with the exception of my wife and cat, no one else - things could be far worse without the lads 😉

Chuggy - The soft side of me says ‘I want my wife and little boy with me’ but the logical me would never want them to go through what I was going through. Especially if it was for eternity! Plus, my 3 year old lad is a handful anyway, but on an Island where it could be dangerous? Nah. He will put himself in so many stupid situations and I’d have to save him. Adding stress I don’t need haha. Shipwreck me with Brian Blessed! He’s hilarious and the stories would be epic. Plus if he really wanted to, he could just yell for help where the other side of the world would hear so I think we would be rescued haha

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Steal The City

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Ellis - probably S&M Metallica, that show is just ridiculous on so many levels. PEAK thrash and when live music really was live!

Chuggy - I’d have ‘Our Live Album Is Better Than Your Live Album’ by Reel Big Fish. It's my favourite live album and I would have killed to be at that show. Banger after banger and it's hilarious throughout. Plus, Ska Punk kinda fits the Island vibe.

Smit - Owl City in Manchester in 2010. It was a weird mix of dance artists and ambient soundscapes but with almost a full orchestra. It was incredible.

James - I have to say the same as Ellis, Metallica’s S&M is class. A/Thee metal band alongside an orchestra… yes please!

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

Smit - Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden. The guy has a plane!

James - Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden, the guy can fly us out in no time.

Ellis - Definitely not Smit. He'll probably bin it. I'd say Chuggy would be the most likely to drive in his van 3,000 miles to pick me up!

Chuggy - ‘We have fire’ and it would be sent to Rammstein's Till Lindermann. He would be over in a fucking heartbeat. No idea how but he LOVES fire haha

You've been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

James - Smit… it just is!

Chuggy - I’d assume I'd be sacrificed. I’m rockin the dad bod for some extra meat and the other lads would outrun me anyway. Be reyt haha

Ellis - tricky one, Smit is probably the easiest to catch, he's quite lean... yeah, probably have a nibble on him if we had to!

Smit - Chuggy because he’s the tallest so it would keep us sustained for a bit longer.

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

Chuggy - This is a tough one. For me personally it would probably be Adam Gontier who used to be in Three Days Grace and is currently in Saint Asonia. His band was my gateway band for getting into rock and metal and I couldn’t be more grateful for that.
James - For me it would be Merle Haggard, the poet of the common man.
Smit - Chester Bennington from Linkin Park. One of my favourite bands growing up and it was a huge loss when he left us.Ellis - I'd have saved Lemmy probably. Not that he'd be much help on the island!
