DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Turkey Vulture

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Turkey Vulture

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Turkey Vulture sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Jim: I’m going to guess that being stranded on a deserted island can get pretty bleak. So on the days when the fish aren’t biting, there’s no milk in the coconuts, the nights where starting a fire isn’t easy or when Wilson floats away, I’m going to need an optimistic pick me up so I choose the fun, funny and exciting “Dare To Be Stupid” album by “Weird Al” Yankovic cause no one’s gonna tell me mashed potatoes can’t be my friend!!

Jessie: Thin Lizzy, Live and Dangerous.  I’ve been listening to it for 15 years and I’m still not tired of it, so I think it would lift my spirits on Devil’s Island!

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

Jim: Without hesitation, I choose the banned cover of Guns N’ Roses “Appetite For Destruction” by Robert Williams. Banned for a reason of course, but there’s a lot going on with that painting and I’ve always been drawn to it.

Jessie: Misfits American Psycho because our kids are obsessed with that album right now and it would remind me of them.

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

Jim: Coors Light, I gotta stay hydrated!

Jessie: Rolling Rock!

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

Jim: I’m not applying for Naked and Afraid any time soon, I’m taking my Misfits pyjama pants.

Jessie: I’m gonna copy Jim and take a pair of pants – I have Obelisk sweatpants (okay, it’s technically blog merch…) that are very comfortable and have pockets!

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

Jim: My wife. Who’s also my bandmate. Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

Jessie: This one is easy for us because we’re married to each other!  I’d want to be stranded with Jim because first he is my husband.  And second, he is really good at fixing things. Third, he watches the show Alone and a lot of those log cabin building YouTube videos, so he’d have some good ideas about how we could survive on the island.

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Turkey Vulture

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Jim: Metallica’s 1989 Seattle concert from the Binge and Purge Box Set.

Jessie: If it’s a concert I’ve seen, Sharon Jones’ and Gaslight Anthem’s performances at Gathering of the Vibes in 2015.  Random, I know.

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

Jim: Guns N’ Roses’ Duff McKagan cause he was the only one in the “Estranged” music video who jumped in a boat and tried to save Axl. Or maybe Johan Hegg, the singer of Amon Amarth ‘cause he puts his back into the oar!

Jessie: Johan Hegg, that’s a good one!  I’d send a message to The Dreadnoughts because they sing lots of sea shanties – maybe they’d be able to find Devil’s Island and sail us outta there!

You've been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

Jim: I sacrifice myself, Jess can eat me if she needs to.

Jessie: That’s very sweet, but I feel like he has to say that lol. Hopefully I’d die first!  Turkey Vulture actually has a song about cannibalism, it’s called “Lost at Sea.”

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

Jim: James Hetfield will be saved. James Hetfield will always be saved.

Jessie: Mike Ness, he has overcome so many obstacles and he’s a storyteller like no other.
