Album Review: Rats of Gomorrah - Infectious Vermin
Reviewed by Dan Phipps
Rats of Gomorrah are a 2 piece band who formed in Germany in 2023 who were formally known as Divide between 2009 and 2023. The band's first singles were released last year and now we see the release of Infectious Vermin which is the bands 13 track debut effort.
Infectious Vermin explodes right out of the gate with its blend of old school death and a more fast paced style of black metal as its rawkus opening track Swarming Death kicks into gear. The blend of riffing styles switches between one another rapidly and also brings in an old school punk vibe which is increasingly evident during the chant filled chorus sections. This recipe is something that the band continues to work with throughout the record's 13 tracks.
It's a formula that does work well however I find the peak track on the album when the band focuses more towards the pure dark death metal vibe on the track Night Orbit. This track flows so nicely together and just sounds just straight up sinister. It's this dark and heavy sound which in my opinion really stands out as I find a lot of the mixed elements to stand too much out on their own instead of working together to seamlessly blend. The overall sound on the release is quite strong with a solid mix and the energy of the more punk sections does translate really well throughout.
You can hear what Rats of Gomorrah are going for with this record and it definitely has its high points, but if I'm being totally honest a lot of the times it feels like it is not quite clicking. It's not bad by any means but it really has nothing exceptional either and doesn't do enough to personally hold my attention.
