Album Review: Teitanblood - From the Visceral Abyss

Dark, extreme, impenetrable... Teitanblood have developed a cult following solely on the sheer heaviness of their work, both sonically and visually they paint a bleak and hopeless picture, like a descent into a Lovecraftian void. Their new release ‘From the Visceral Abyss’, is long awaited, with the previous album coming six years ago. It’s no drastic departure from their previous material; they haven't tried to do anything radically different but they have manufactured a diabolical beast of an album here.

From the outset the dirtiness of the sound hits you, raw and unfiltered, buzzing with malice and intent. Lightning quick riffage and blasting drums usher in a blistering start, and apart from the odd atmospheric track intro, and track 4 ‘Sevenhundreddogsfromhell’ which forms an interlude of dark, hellish nihilism, an ambient hellscape fit for a descent into paranoia and delirium, the pace never lets up, thrashing and blasting forth in a maelstrom.

Standout tracks for me were the opener 'Enter the Hypogeum’ which sets the standard for what is to come and track two ‘Sepulchral Carrion God’ which layers in some heavier more death/doom sounding riffs as opposed to the blackened depravity of the rest of the album. The drumming on all tracks goes beyond simple blasts though and adds texture and colour through fills and patterns, keeping your ears and brain entertained.

Fans of blackened death metal should be thrilled by this release; it’s a really quality album and one that should cement Teitanblood’s place within the pantheon of legendary bands in this genre.
