Bloodstock Bound: ThunarWülf

As Bloodstock gets closer, we delve deep into the line up to find out more about some of the bands playing the New Blood and EMP stages at this years event.

Today we chat with ThunarWülf

The Razor's Edge: Please introduce yourself and your band mates.

ThunarWülf: ThunarWülf are:

Will (vocals, bouzouki)
Karen (Keytar)
Coll (Whistle)
Gibby (Guitar)
Rich (Guitar)
Jesse (Bass Guitar)
Nick (Drums)

The Razor's Edge: How would you describe your sound?

ThunarWülf: We're a folk metal band, combining elements of traditional folk tunes with metal. Riffs, jigs, horn-raising, mead-swigging type folk metal.

The Razor's Edge: How did you land your spot on the Bloodstock bill?

ThunarWülf: We entered the Sheffield Metal 2 the Masses competition and won the Grand Final, securing victory in our local heats!

The Razor's Edge: How tough was this years M2TM competition?

ThunarWülf: The competition was very tough this year. So many of the bands from all stages of the competition really were exceptional this year. The finals was particularly spectacular, showcasing what an awesome metal scene Sheffield still has.

The Razor's Edge: What does playing at Bloodstock mean to you?

ThunarWülf: Most of ThunarWülf have been attending Bloodstock for years, seeing it grow over the years and expand into the awesome beast it is today. To play Bloodstock really is a life goal come true for all of us! It's awesome that Bloodstock gives us and other coming bands this opportunity and we're honoured to be part of it.

The Razor's Edge: For people who’ve never seen you live, what can they expect at Bloodstock?

ThunarWülf: Woad, horns, inflatable swords, capes, incense and antlers! Our music touches various old folk tales, from Celtic Goddesses to Pirates. We've also got a surprise cover of a Moldovan tune that went down well at our recent gigs.

The Razor's Edge: What day are you performing?

ThunarWülf: Friday.

The Razor's Edge: What other bands are you looking forward to watching at Bloodstock this year?

ThunarWülf: Emperor are going to be awesome, as most of us haven't seen them live yet. I'm absolutely pumped about Feuerschwanz, being another Folk Metal band on the bill. Gojira are another highlight of the weekend for us all. We're also really looking forward to seeing some of our friends playing at Bloodstock, so we'll be cheering on Ba'al, LN and Adfeilion.

The Razor's Edge: Playing the New Blood Stage is just the first steppingstone in a bands journey. What’s next in your plans for world domination?

ThunarWülf: We've got a number of new songs ready to release, which will form our forthcoming EP, Cailleach. We've already got a number of gigs booked around the country for the end of this year / early next year. It's always good to see more and more people turning up at each of our gigs in blue facepaint (Woad) and ThunarWülf shirts!

It would be awesome to be invited back to Bloodstock again in the future, not to mention some of the other metal festivals throughout Europe. Aside from that, we've got plenty of songs in progress which will ultimately form our debut album at a later date.

The Razor's Edge: Are you camping with the fans? Which campsite are you heading for?

ThunarWülf: We are! We've not decided exactly which campsite yet. If you follow the sound of weird folk tunes late at night, you're probably heading in the right direction!

The Razor's Edge: You’ve gotta keep hydrated at Bloodstock, what is your drink of choice for the weekend?

ThunarWülf: Mead! We've been challenged to a mead-off with Moshville Times, so there'll be two types of home brewed woad coloured mead making their rounds at the camping area. In the arena we'll be making our way through as many of the ales in the Serpents Lair as we can get through.

The Razor's Edge: See you at Bloodstock in a few weeks!

ThunarWülf: Hell yes!
