DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Cartoons Can’t Die

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Cartoons Can’t Die sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Mac - Katy B On A Mission. If I can't play an instrument, I want some good vibes and this album has always brought this for me.
Ryan - Machine Head - Burn My Eyes. Some of the most creative drumming I’ve ever heard. Kris Kontos was the best!
Danny 5 - Sleep Token - Take Me Back to Eden. In my mind this is the definition of 'masterpiece'. Not a single miss on this record and so much emotion! Absolute rollercoaster from start to finish so perfect for every possible mood the island would impress on me
Maria - I would grab Sempiternal by Bring me the Horizon as when I put it on I sing and scream my heart out to all the songs which I find it helps to release some tensions -which I feel I may have being shipwrecked!

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

Mac - I think it has to be Megadeth's Rust in Peace, great artwork, the blue matches the ocean, some people in the background I can make friends with. Try and keep it social, you know? I can at least go mad with someone there.
Ryan - Bat out of hell. Loved this album cover when I was a kid!!
Danny 5 - Badmotorfinger! Such a CVLT looking album cover from a band who have really shaped my progressive taste over the years. Nice to have something to remember where I started.
Maria - Das Album by We butter the bread with butter as it has a picture of a toaster and toasted bread just to remind myself of the bread that I can’t have!

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

Mac - ooooh, now, any drink? My beloved Pepsi Max Ginger was distraught when they stopped making it. Got me through my 32 days in hospital so I'm sure it can get me through being stranded!
Ryan - Southern comfort & coke! Yum!
Danny 5 - I'm unashamedly a Guinness man through and through! Hopefully that would keep me in a 'stout' frame of mind.
Maria - Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri, enough said

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

Mac - It's gotta be our own Godless tee, what better way to say "f*** you world" than a t- shirt that says "I Am Godless"?
Ryan - Thong. From any band…Got to get my all over tan!
Danny 5 - It would have to be my Orden Ogan bandana from their Final Days Special Edition album release. I can finally grow my hair out and look like a badass pirate! Such an underrated Power Metal band that I highly recommend for anyone that loves riffs and lore.
Maria - My Myles Kennedy, the art of letting go tour tee

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

Mac -  I don't think anyone else to be honest, we are a smart bunch and we haven't ever fallen out, we are also very good at physical work so not sure but if I had to, probably Morgan Freeman so at least I can have an interesting narration and conversations.
Ryan - Kris Kontos. He could gimme some drum lessons!
Danny 5 - My cats! They can help me hunt for food and catch fish. Also they're great listeners and appreciate my love for odd time signatures.
Maria - Gordon Ramsey as he will know how to make a decent meal out of whatever scraps we can muster together, so why not have a chef who can make the best of the bleakness - he also swears a lot too and is straight talking which I like.

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Mac - Definitely the show from BB King's 85th birthday, that was hands down one of the best shows I've ever seen and he was such a nice guy, just chatted for half of his set.
Ryan - Pantera live in Moscow!
Danny 5 - This is a tough one! I was very lucky to see Black Sabbath on their The End tour back in 2018. It was a bittersweet moment to see such an iconic band but knowing that their musical journey was coming towards its conclusion. Any Gojira show I've been to would be a close second (the pyrotechnics phewee).
Maria - This would be Limp Bizkit at Gunnersbury Park in August 2023. It was the first time I had seen them and I’ve loved them for a long time and seeing them live was so epic and the crowd was electric and jumping to every song - they really know how to put on a show!

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

Mac - Marty Friedman, he's in Japan right? They'll be on time with high tech and luxury.
Ryan - The Police. Sting has experience with this. He’d know what to do. I hope!
Danny 5 - We've got to get the message to Pitbull. Mr Worldwide would have an inherent advantage finding our exact location and the dough to send a search and rescue superyacht to pick us up.
Maria - I would say Amon Amarth as they get the crowd to row at every show which is fantastic to watch, so I would have thought they would have some experience in rowing to our rescue and getting their crew or fans to support !

You've been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

Mac - oooft now I think it's me as I have the most meat on my bones, not ideal...
Ryan - Mac - So we can all have a long lie 😂
Danny 5 - Sorry Ryan.. It's time for the Frying Scotsman.
Maria - I hate to answer this question but if I had to choose I would have to say Mac as he has a lot of muscle and would make for a healthy meal

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

Mac - Gotta be Jimmy Carr, odd choice but his attitude on life is very worth listening to.
Ryan - Kris Kontos obviously!
Danny 5 - Tom Morello. This is where I really started to think of the guitar as a tool for expression. From Guitar Hero III to Audioslave, he has been a constant reminder that guitarists are cool! The way he has continuously pushed the boundaries of guitar playing is very inspiring, as well as his activism in the wider world.
Maria - I would say Myles Kennedy he is so humble, has a tenacious attitude and never gives up and his voice and songwriting abilities have me in awe - he has a way of speaking to your heart and I don’t think he knows how brilliant he is!! … If he does he is very humble with it !
