DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring No Murder No Moustache

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find No Murder No Moustache sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

The reality is that I’m dead on the bottom of the sea, still trying to pick one album.  But for this I’m going with Americana by the Offspring.  I know it’s a bit of their first move into the mainstream so maybe not considered as cool as Smash or Ixnay, but Americana is the album that got me into Punk Rock.  Musically and lyrically it’s an absolute classic start to finish (maybe 1 skip).  So much of the music I’ve got into since then has all stemmed back to getting this album.

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

“Silence” by Sonata Arctica.  I’ve always loved the artwork on this cover, and the hard split of the left and right summer and winter images.  No Murder No Moustache is a bit of a dichotomy of serious and absurd in terms of songs and the artwork for my first album is similar with two halves of a very different scene on each side, so it really speaks to me.

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

Easy. Guinness.  Not sure it’s quite the right drink for a desert island, but if we can get it extra cold, then I’m sure it’ll do a fine job.  (Come on, I’m a Celtic Punk Band – it was always going to be Guinness).

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

Bad Religion crossed out cross t-shirt.  Absolute classic punk shirt.  I haven’t had one for a long time as mine was worn to rags.  Bad Religion are a huge influence on me, and although you might not hear it musically, they really inspired me to be clever with lyrics and not to shy away from subjects that I feel strongly about.

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Iron Maiden – Download festival 2003.  This was the first festival style event that I went to and at the time Maiden were my all time favourite band.  The setlist was incredible, the atmosphere was great and it was a real case of the right band, right show, at the right time for me as a fan.

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

First thought would be Sting, but he’s probably sick of getting messages in bottles so would just chuck it away.

I’m going to pick Joachim from Sabaton.  I reckon he’s got enough naval knowledge that the band could commandeer the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise ship and come and get me before the festival is done.

My handwriting is awful though so they probably wouldn’t understand it.

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

This is a monster of a question.  I’ve never really been someone who knows much about the people in the bands I like.  I honestly don’t think it’s possible for me to pick a single person that has managed to influence me in both music and life perspectives.  My thoughts are going towards Fat Mike (NOFX), Greg Graffin (Bad Religion) and Laura Jane Grace (Against Me!), but I actually think I’m going to deploy the emergency life raft and rescue the Dropkick Murphys.

Of course I’ve been influenced in terms of Celtic Punk by them, but the reason I’m picking them particularly is that they’ve shown that even as a big band with a lot of non-political followers, it would have been easy for them to keep silent on their feelings about the current American government, but they have spoken out despite backlash from “fans” and really stuck to their guns.
