Album Review: Kjeld - Ôfstân

Friesland, a province in the Netherlands isn’t widely regarded as a hotbed of black metal, yet bizarrely has spawned two black metal outfits bearing the same name. A three-year writing process from 2017-19 has culminated in the second album from the five-piece who have been in existence for close to two decades. If you like your black metal delivered with aggression and atmosphere, then ‘Ôfstân’ is an album you will want to give a listen.
Having taken 12 years to release debut album ‘Skym’, having another record within six years is almost prolific. Of course, like most black metal outfits, Kjeld’s members are also musicians in multiple other bands, so it isn’t a surprise in many respects.
‘Ôfstân’ means distance and this album is fast, hostile, and yet balanced by some more melodic elements that merge neatly, giving the band breadth and substance. Drawing inspiration from Frisian nature and myths, Kjeld craft their own sound which drapes darkness over the 55 minutes of music. Lyrics are snarled and chanted in Frisian, a minority Germanic language, adding to the mystique that surrounds the band. The barrage of blistering drumming and fierce guitar riffs is ruthless, an unstoppable wall of black metal intensity. On the occasion when there is a pause for breath, it is short-lived before the descent into explosive rhythmic patterns and frantic tremolo guitar work recommences.
Kjeld utilise their synths to create layers in an expansive sonic soundscape. Used to great effect on the epic title track, there are more subtle elements interspersed throughout the album. At times, the unyielding battery threatens to overwhelm but despite the slight repetition that is generated, this should tick the boxes for black metal fans. The slight folk tinge of ‘Asbran’ and the thick synths of ‘Wite Fokel’ adding variety, drawing deep on their deep, rich, and ancient history.
Fast-paced, yet melodic and harmonious, this is an album that grows with every listen. It’s uncompromising, intelligent, and crafted with precision. Recommended for those who dwell within the permafrost realms.
