Album Review: Nordic Giants - Symbiosis

Shrouded in mystery, Nordic Giants’ third full-length release continues to deliver their enigmatic post rock music with all the dramatic impact that fans have come to expect. Having formed in 2010, the band’s rich tapestry that weaves itself into a fabulous, almost spiritual journey continues.
For those familiar with Nordic Giants, then ‘Symbiosis’ will be a dramatic and intense continuation of the themes and soundscapes which they delivered in 2015’s A Séance of Dark Delusions and the documentary/soundtrack project ‘Amplify Human Vibration’.
This is an album that will not provide instant gratification. Indeed, several listens deep and it is still as demanding, challenging and intriguing as the first play. ‘Symbiosis’ is a multi-layered work that requires concentration, dedication and commitment. The rewards are rich.
Rôka and Löki who form the mysterious duo behind Nordic Giants explain: “We start with a pure idea, we take all the emotions that live inside us, that are buried deep within the sub-consciousness mind and give them the opportunity to shine through in musical form”.
The themes represent the interdependent relationship of all life. With a mixture of light and darkness, moments of crashing euphoria are intertwined with segments of ambience and soaring sonic instrumental passages. Rôka and Löki have incorporated a range of instruments that guide and shape this musical evolution. Vintage analogue synths, Tibetan bowls and a Carnyx horn are amongst the sources within this elegant and expansive release.
The return of guest vocalists Alex Hedley and Freyja brings further ethereal and magical contributions to the tracks ‘Faceless’ and ‘Spheres’ respectively. The haunting piano of ‘Hjem’ which will be one of the many tracks premiered in the band’s forthcoming UK tour is sure to be accompanied by some of the many unique films that the band creates to support their music.
It’s almost impossible to be unmoved by the emotion that Nordic Giants stir in the listener. The melancholic elements that are contrasted with moments of elation simply stir the soul. The songs are short, with the bookends of ‘Philosophy of Mind’ and ‘infinity’ tipping the seven-minute mark. Elsewhere, Nordic Giants have been conservative in their stance, but have not compromised quality one iota.
The album artwork and overall package will be something to treasure, with photographer Neal Grundy contributing to the continued theme and union which links the music. One can only wait for the full release to explore what promises to be one of the most impressive releases of 2022. It’s been a privilege to have this release in advance. It’s one that will sit far outside the usual metal fan’s scope. Be adventurous, immerse yourself in this album and simply absorb the quality that oozes from start to finish.
