Album Review: Timelost - Drained
Reviewed by Tim Finch
Transport yourself back to a time in the mid to late 90’s where grunge and alt-rock was taking control of the scene, wiping out dated heavy metal genres in an instant. A time of a musical changing of the guards but also a time when I was most influenced by the latest music on offer. The grunge bands of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sound Garden et al had peaked and the second generation was rearing its head spearheaded by the likes of Weezer and Headswim.
As the opening notes of ‘Lockjaw’ ring out the listener is immediately transported back to that time, for Timelost and their latest album ‘Drained’ is not out of place back in that era. In fact this is the perfectly packaged masterpiece that would have been a chart topper way back when.
.
Born out of a dispersed network of friends collaborating digitally, Timelost has developed since their birth into a band paying homage to the genre’s greats whilst retaining their own identity through the music. ‘Cranium Diet’ the perfect example of this, with its heavy Weezer-esc influence yet incorporating a magical minute plus instrumental interlude mid-way, providing an escape for the listener, allowing them to be transported away from the everyday mundane to the bands own world of musical experimentation.
Recorded and mixed by the skilled hands of fellow Philadelphian Scoops Dardaris (known for his work with Prince Daddy & The Hyenaamongst amongst others), the album has the perfect sound, not so polished as to hide any imperfections, instead retaining a purposeful gritty feel that adds depth and feeling to the records overall atmosphere.
For those of us of a certain age, this record is the perfect reminder of what an age we lived in. For others ‘Drained’ is the perfect gateway album, get lost here and end up back in the late 90’s with a wealth of material you’ve never heard of before to explore!
