DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Exiled Hope
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Exiled Hope sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
I grabbed "Ghostlights" by Avantasia. That album is very nostalgic to me, being one of the first "newer" (read: not classic rock/NWOBHM) power/symphonic metal bands I discovered in high school. I also really love their album "The Scarecrow" but for getting shipwrecked, "Ghostlights" just has a more desolate, darker vibe. It covers a broad spectrum of heavier and lighter sounds, which keeps the album interesting throughout and keeps it listenable no matter what mood I'm in.
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
This isn't out yet, but I'm already obsessed with the cover of Seven Spires' "A Fortress Called Home." I love a good fancy castle, it does indeed feel like home when I look at it.
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
I'm weird and I like to make my own lemonade with water, honey, and lemon juice. So it would probably be that haha. I don't drink alcohol but I like experimenting in the kitchen and making my own fun straight-edge drinks.
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
I have a shirt from this band I love that recently broke up, Threads of Fate. So I would probably save that one, since as far as I know, it's irreplaceable.
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
Probably my best friend from high school. We will talk each other's ears off for hours and we both know a lot about a bunch of random things, so we could probably even help each other plan an escape.
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
I'm sending the message to Christopher Bowes from Alestorm because he's a pirate. Messages in bottles and sailing hazardous seas are kind of his jam.
You've been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
I'm the only member, so I guess I'll still sacrifice a leg and become the pirate I was meant to be if it means the rest of my body survives.
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
Everyone who knows me is probably so done hearing me yammer about Avantasia and Edguy, but I'm saving Tobias Sammet haha. Even though Avantasia isn't technically a solo project, Exiled Hope might not exist if Tobias Sammet's work with Avantasia hadn't shown me that you can do anything you want with your music career as long as you try hard enough to make it happen and network frequently.
