DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Dead Karma
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Dead Karma sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
Andrew: Thrice – The Illusions of Safety. Formational album for me as a musician and since it’s my one album on the island, the repeating lines to end the final song “you’ve got to play again” would be painfully suitable.
Sean: TOOL - 10 0000 days
Jacob: Dark Side of the Moon - Decent music for sitting on an island but will also be great to listen to as I lose my mind and/or find drugs there.
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
Sean: Queens of The Stone Age self titled for… reasons.
Andrew: Mayhem’s Dawn of the Black Hearts. Just to try and ruin whatever mood Sean is trying to create in the shack.
Jacob: Pantera - Metal Magic. For the same reasons as Sean.
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
Sean: Water. Oh, you want a fun answer? To stay on brand, PBR. Not my favourite beer, but I drink a few every show we play.
Andrew: I’m not a big drinker, but give me some easy drinking rum. Seems appropriate for the situation.
Jacob: Since I’m on an Island, any type of sour beer.
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
Andrew: I have a beat up Black Dahlia Murder shirt from when they released Miasma. It has a Cthulhu-looking creature on the front with its brain removed. Looks creepy, so if I’m not wearing it maybe I can hang it up to frighten off any potential predators. It’s also about to naturally lose its sleeves anyway, so might as well tear them off and embrace the deserted island look.
Sean: At this point, it could be a Corey Feldman onesie.
Jacob: Black Sabbath coke mirror.
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
Sean: Tom Hanks.
Andrew: Not a funny answer, but it’d be my wife and kids. Easy.
Jacob: Whoever has lasted longest on the reality show “Alone”.
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
Sean: Alice in Chains Unplugged.
Andrew: The first time I saw At the Gates was their reunion tour in 2008. Great experience, great show. It sounds awesome and also appeals to my nostalgia.
Jacob: GG Allin. Really any show works.
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
Sean: Dexter Holland has a pilot’s license, right? Yeah, googled that one. Him, 100%.
Andrew: If the Simpsons taught me anything, it’s that Sting would do anything for one of his fans.
Jacob: Either Bruce Dickinson or David Hasselhoff. I’ll go with the ‘Hoff.
You've been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
Sean: Andrew. Jacob and I can go on to be the next Royal Blood/Death From Above.
Andrew: Sean said he’d sacrifice me? Not if I kill him first.
Jacob: Sorry, Andrew. Sean’s right.
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
Sean: Flea. I hope it’s 80s/90s Flea so that we have enough drugs to last a few days or to put us into a coma.
Andrew: Dustin Kensrue from Thrice. Lyrically, vocally, musically – I can’t think of one musician who has influenced all three of those areas like he has.
Jacob: Michael Starr from Steel Panther. Enough said.
