A night of musical mastery unfolded at Birmingham’s O2 Institute as Myles Kennedy graced the stage for his solo tour, with Devin Townsend delivering an awe-inspiring opening set. The stripped-down format allowed both artists to showcase their raw talent and emotional depth, leaving the audience captivated.

Devin Townsend, known for his boundary-pushing music and theatrical performances, traded visual theatrics for intimacy with an acoustic set that felt deeply personal. Opening with ‘Let It Roll’, his signature wit and self-deprecating humour instantly broke the ice with the crowd. The inclusion of ‘Love?’ from his Strapping Young Lad days offered a glimpse into his heavier past, but its reimagining as a delicate acoustic piece gave the song new life.

Townsend’s ability to shift effortlessly between tenderness and grandeur was most evident during ‘Bring Him Home’ a cover from Les Misérables that showcased his remarkable vocal control. Moments like ‘Deadhead’ and ‘Lightworker’ were full of emotion, while ‘Solar Winds’ brought a sense of otherworldly wonder to the set. Devin’s acoustic arrangements highlighted his unique artistry, proving he can shine in any musical context.

As the lights dimmed and Myles Kennedy took the stage, the audience was treated to a performance that felt less like a concert and more like an intimate storytelling session. Opening with ‘The Art of Letting Go’, Kennedy set the tone for a night filled with masterful musicianship.

The setlist spanned Kennedy’s solo career, showcasing tracks like ‘Devil on the Wall’ and 'Blind Faith’, both delivered with heartfelt passion. The haunting beauty of ‘Love Can Only Heal’ held the audience in silent awe, while ‘Year of the Tiger’ carried a raw emotional weight that resonated across the packed room.

Kennedy also acknowledged his connection to Alter Bridge by performing ‘All Ends Well’. Songs like ‘Miss You When You’re Gone’ and ‘Get Along’ added layers to the set, demonstrating his continued evolution as a songwriter. Ending the night with ‘Say What You Will’, Kennedy left to the sound of rapturous applause, his voice lingering in the air as the fans found their way out of the venue.

Birmingham was fortunate to witness such a unique pairing of talent this evening, and for those in attendance, it was a night they won’t soon forget.
