DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Contortion

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Contortion sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

St1: Alice in Chains "Jar of Flies"
AIC is one of my all time favorites. This album is a masterpiece of art, and probably a huge contrast from what my band mates will be choosing. Might need something chill while marooned on an island. 😉

Strange: I would make sure I had Children Of Bodoms Hatebreeder album. The songwriting, solos, everything about that album made me push my boundaries as a musician and opened my mind as to what you could do with music.

Genius: Ooooh it's gunna be Lamb of God's Ashes of the Wake. That was my introduction to to heavier stuff and instantly fell in love with it and changed direction of music.

J-bo: One of my most favored albums is "Blood Rooted" by Sepultura, it's got covers, and live tracks from 3 different eras of sepultura so it has a little bit of everything and showcases the evolution of the band as well as the bands that got them into metal. Great tunes!

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

St1: Slayer Divine Intervention has always been some of my favorite art work. It's such an amazing cover and phenomenal album!!

Strange: The poster going on the wall of my shack would be Dimmu Borgirs Puritanical Euphoric Misanthorpia album. Again just love the song structure and writing of that album. Also the raw sound that it has. Just pure madness.

Genius: Hmmmm. We'll when I'd eventually start hallucinating from starvation Plini's Handmade Cities cover would probably be fun to stare at with city attacking prism shooting water towers, hermit crab flamingos and giraffes carrying its pet fish. It's random n ridiculous and I like it.

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

St1: Scotch on the rocks, for me. 🙂 Something smooth and not too smokey.

Strange: My drink of choice would be any lager beer. Not too picky. If I had to be precise though Castle Lager for sure.

Genius: I'm a simple man, ritual brewery extra red ale and I want it cold like just a half a degree from starting to freeze. Just to get that first crispy sip to make your nips stiffen up. Refreshing!

J-bo: I'd have to go with coffee, its what fuels my existence!

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

St1: I'd hope it would be my favorite Sepultura shirt I picked up in Brazil... or maybe the signed bottle of Caçasa from the same band. 😉 MORE TO DRINK!!! LOL

Strange: As for band merch I’d have to go with my Behemoth The Satanist album t shirt. I wear it more often than I think and it fits just like a good pair of jeans.

Genius: if it's our band's merch. I'd save the women's underwear. Eventually we're gunna need it.

J-bo: My Contortion hoodie, it works as a tour multi tool, it doubles as a pillow, a blanket, a fishing net, some torch wrappings or severed limb bandages depending on what situation you get into!

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

St1: A boat full of strippers or porn stars may be preferable... or people that can survive on an island better than me.

Strange: If I had to choose out of all my bandmates to be stranded with, I’d choose Gene. He’s my drinking buddy on the road lol

Genius: Oh that primitive technology dude that used to watch on youtube until 2am, we could build a whole town out of sticks and mud or Bear Grylls to learn how to survive on beetle balls n bat urine.

J-bo: I'd rather be stuck with an all girl band, lol, but for real, I'd be jazzed to be shipwrecked with these bunch of contorted characters, we could write the most epic 3 million track album then bury it in a treasure chest to be found hundreds of years from now!

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

St1: I looooove the live Opeth album! I have the vinyl version and play it often. It's on of my fav live performances.

Strange: The one live show I’d love to listen to is either Dimmu Borgirs Live in Dallas Texas on the 04 Ozzfest tour or Children Of Bodoms Stockholm Knockout Live. Can’t decide between the two.

Genius: Rush in Rio from 2002. The instruments were beautifully levelled and they play so many bangers.

J-bo: I will never forget my first concert ever, it was on my 15th birthday, my pops took me to see Joe Satriani surf with the aliens, I was blown away with the sounds coming out of the guitar, after witnessing that melodic magic show, I was hooked, I knew I'd be chasing the musical dragon for the rest of my life.

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

St1: Probably my friends in Crypta. Maybe Taina, as she actually answers my messages regularly. Want to ensure the message is recieved and we actually get a response. Lmao

Strange: My message in a bottle would be going to Phil Labonte. I feel like he’d pull some team America shit to get me off that island lol

Genius: I'd have to send the message to Sting. Who else better to receive a message in a bottle? If he doesn't answer the message in a bottle then humanity itself is doomed.

You've been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

St1: Like any good leader, I suppose I should sacrifice myself for the betterment of the team.

Strange: I’d rather not answer who I’m going to eat to survive haha

Genius: Oh you gotta kinda think about it don't you? Do you wanna eat good lean meat like the drummer or someone else who isn't the drummer. Respectfully gotta eat Jaybo. I love you Jason, nothing personal.

J-bo: We all pitch in our deadweight, drums are useless in this area because I need all limbs to perform although I might be able to pitch in an arm and still perform adequately, guitars don't need legs to shred so chop down that ego tree, vocals don't need any limbs so stumpy can still belt out them vox like the king of the lollipop guild, teamwork helps the dream work.

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

St1: Dave Mustane of Megadeth.
He was a huge influence on my desire to play guitar and sing at the same time. Especially with how diverse and intense their riffs can be!! As a young boy, I was always in awe of how he pulled this off.

Strange: The person I’d save is Alexi Laiho. He’s influenced me the most, made me want to pursue music, keep pushing myself etc. just an amazing musician overall.

Genius: Well I gotta save Stone. I wouldn't have done the things I've done musically if wasn't for him. He drives the band and keeps us on our toes. I owe all my gratitude to him for how far I've been able go with music.
