DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Sypha
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Sypha sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
Will: For me being a huge Green Day fan, it would have to be one of their albums, probably ‘21st Century Breakdown’! It’s an album that means so much to me, and it's become that comfort album you just go back to time after time.
Alicia: Ooh a hard one! I’m between the first two albums from Mcfly - either ‘Room on the Third Floor’ or ‘Motion in the Ocean’. I think ‘Motion in the Ocean' just tops it for me. Mcfly is the first band that I fell in love with and this album is very comforting and nostalgic for me.
Alfred: I think it would be Bullet for My Valentine ‘Scream Aim Fire’. This is the first album that really got me into guitar and it’s one that I can always return to time after time, without getting bored.
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
Will: It’s got to be an album art that looks the part, something that’s really cool and beautiful to look at, so I'm gonna go with ‘Tape Deck Heart' by Frank Turner. The design of the artwork is beautiful and off the top of my head I’d probably say it's one of my favourite ever artworks.
Alicia: Sounds simple but ‘Blink-182’! That smiley face album cover is iconic and again provokes a strong nostalgic feeling for me. I don’t think I’d ever get bored of looking at that.
Alfred: ‘Rising’ by Rainbow. The album artwork is just so cool looking and iconic - it always takes me back to the first time I heard that album, when I was younger.
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
Will: It has to be a double spiced rum and coke done Cuba libre style with the wedge of lime. It’s a classic and it never disappoints.
Alicia: Cider! But the good kind. Not the standard commercial stuff that a lot of pubs have. Ascension cider to be exact - never tasted a better cider than this local Sussex brand. (Try it, prove me wrong)
Alfred: A Jack n Coke - in my quest to try and be more like Lemmy 😈
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
Will: For me it's going to have to be a hoodie of some kind, I can’t survive without one! As for which band, probably my Metallica Ride the Lightning hoodie, it’s extremely comfortable and obviously it looks cool as hell!
Alicia: Same as Will, it’s got to be a hoodie! I’d take my black, Architects hoodie. It has an awesome and fairly simplistic design and completely my aesthetic.
Alfred: It’s got to be my Motorhead T-shirt, probably my most worn item.
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
Will: Other than them, someone who knows how to have a laugh, and could make the situation feel more bearable. I don’t know exactly who but it would probably be any of those huge metal bands from the 70s, the ones who really knew how to party! Definitely make the time go faster.
Alicia: I’m gonna be strategic here and say someone like Sabrina Carpenter. I think a lot of people would come looking for her.
Alfred: Probably Ozzy Osbourne. I bet that man has a bunch of amazing stories to tell and island life certainly wouldn't be boring!
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
Will: I’d want it to be one I didn’t get the chance to see, something new and exciting for me to watch to pass the time. I’m gonna say Hendrix at Woodstock 69, cause what a show that would have been to see! Could get hours and hours of enjoyment out of seeing that!
Alicia: I’m gonna go for the complete opposite of Will and choose a gig that I’d want to relive! And that would probably be Halestorm and In this Moment at Ally Pally. It was this incredible night of women in metal and I was just blown away - I left feeling so inspired.
Alfred: Avenged Sevenfold ‘Live in the LBC’, it’s probably my most listened to live album. I had the DVD growing up and it’s something that I’ll forever come back to.
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
Will: I'm gonna go with BONO from U2. Why you ask? He owns a boat, which I think would really help us in our current situation! So yeah, he’d be getting my message.
Alicia: Let’s go with Sting from The Police. I just feel like he’d get it somehow, you know?
Alfred: Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden as he’s a pilot with his own plane.
You've been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
Will: This is a tough question, mainly because I'm pretty sure it would actually be me! But assuming I am able to save myself I’m gonna say it would have to be Alfred. He’s in the gym a lot, has a lot of muscle on him, probably more to go round. Sorry Alf.
Alicia: Sorry Will, but you said it yourself. You’re probably the nicest member so I feel like you’d do it for the band 💪
Alfred: Will looks yummy.
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
Will: I said in the first question my favourite album was a Green Day album so when I say Billie Joe Armstrong I don’t think it will be a shock. He’s the reason I first ever wanted to pick up and play an instrument, it was watching him on stage that made me want to play live, I think its safe to say without him I might have never become a musician at all.
Alicia: I think it would probably have to be Tom Fletcher from Mcfly. Although not the most obvious reference for our music, Mcfly, and particularly Tom, have influenced my journey as a vocalist massively - having grown up listening to them. His songwriting abilities are hugely underrated and live energy is unmatched. I think Tom and Danny shaped my ability to harmonise as well as strive to create an original, distinct sound that is just ‘Sypha’ – like how they do with Mcfly.
Alfred: Synyster Gates - he’s my ultimate guitar hero. Everything from his jazz and classical influence in metal playing, to even to his stage presence, I’ve tried to steal it all!
