DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Elimination.
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we found British thrash trio Elimination sat on the beach. This is far from their home, they've got an album due out this week. How did they get here? And how will they get home?
How did the band cope with life on Devil's Island? Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
So you're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
Neil: I would defiantly have to choose Metallica’s 'And Justice For All', it’s one of the first metal albums I heard when I was a kid so it will always have a special meaning for me. It was also not your typical thrash album, the songs were fast, but they also had a melody that put it aside from other thrash bands at the time.
David: It’ll have to be Iron Maiden’s 'Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son', it’s the best Maiden album and I can listen to it all the way through without getting bored, there is not one bad song on it.
Leigh: Judas Priest’s 'Painkiller' for me, it is like the epitome of metal and has such scorching lead work of any mainstream metal release.
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
Neil: I would put up Judas Priest’s 'Painkiller', the album cover looks fucking cool and the album is not too bad either ha-ha. This album had a perfect mix of Priest’s old school heavy metal but also induced more faster thrash elements... the shack would defiantly be shaking from all the head banging.
David: 'Live After Death', it is the album that got me into metal.
Leigh: 'Sad Wings of Destiny' because it’s an awesome painting and it’s fucking Priest.
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to chose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
Neil: I usually enjoy a good strong cup of tea before I go to bed… but seriously you cannot beat a bottle of Jager to get you through the Desert Island blues ha-ha
David: VODKA!! Because I am alcohol depend ha-ha.
Leigh: American Pale Ale, I love the hoppy bite and the next day to confirm I’m a naughty man.
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. Whats the merch and for what band?
Neil: I am a lover of band tank tops. Suns out, guns out as they say, especially if the sun is shinning on the beach, so I’m usually sporting a 'Ride The Lighting' or Slayer Tank Top.
David: It’s not really band merch but my “Kill The Kardashians” shirt, I love Gary Holt and Exodus.
Leigh: The merch girl t-shirt attached to my girlfriend haha
You're sat on the island thinking "I'm stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity"... who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
Neil: Obviously, I would rather be stuck there with my Mrs as she’s better looking than Dave or Leigh (Sorry guys, not ha-ha) and I will need the eye candy for motivation.
David: I cannot decide, it is either both or none of them.
Leigh: I’d chose Neil, as Dave would drink all my booze.
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
Neil: Kreator from Bloodstock 2017 was an awesome show, they could of easily of headlined that day of the festival instead of Ghost. Kreator is one of those thrash bands that did not get the recognition that bands such as Metallica and Megadeth got for their role in shaping the thrash metal scene.
David: 'Live After Death'… again, it’s awesome.
Leigh: 'Death…Live In LA' It is the perfect example of Death live.
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the one musician most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
Neil: I would send the message to Bruce Dickinson because he could fly a plane to the Island and pick me up or, at least, drop of more supplies.
David: Anyone out of Alestorm because they can sail me away on a pirate ship and bring rum.
Leigh: I’d message Kirk Hammett to call me on the iPhone with all his riffs that he lost.
You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
Neil: Ha-ha, well, I am not sure how the other guys would taste but if I had to choose one then I would have to choose Dave, at least the supplies of Rum would survive for longer lol
David: Ha-ha, I will return the favour. I would eat Neil as there is not much meat on Leigh.
Leigh: I will be the same as Dave, I’ll eat Neil as he’ll have more nutritional value.
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
Neil: James Hetfield would defiantly be the one for me. Metallica was the first band I heard as a kid which then got me into the whole thrash metal thing. My first band was a Metallica covers band with me being Hetfield (minus the guitar) and has always been a huge influence on my vocals.
David: Scott Ian of Anthrax as he always looks happy as fuck when he is playing.
Leigh: Glen Tipton, he’s the guitarist I’ve tried to emulate over my career.
Sadly there is no room on our boat, so we have to sail away from Devil's Island leaving the lads on the beach. As the island slowly shrinks on the horizon the Jager and Vodaka seems to be flowing freely. I think they may just be enjoying their time on the island! We see no sign of Alestorm as we sail home, we think they ay be stuck there for a while.
