DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Next Stop Olympus
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we found Matt and Conor of Salisbury base metalcore outfit Next Stop Olympus sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
Unfortunately it’s only the two of us today, we're not sure the others made it to dry land...
So you're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
Conor: ‘A New Hope’ by Vanna, it’s just banger after banger.
Matt: ‘Runes’ by Bury Tomorrow, it’;s got a great mix of some heavier and softer songs.
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
Conor: ‘The City Sleeps In Flames’ by Scary Kids Scaring Kids because if I’m trapped on an island, it’ll be nice to imagine the rest of civilisation fucked aswell.
Matt: ‘Balls Out’ by Steel Panther because there’s an attractive women on the front of it and let's be honest, if I’m stuck on an island I’ll still have needs and it might help pass the time.
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
Conor: Gentlemen Jack and Coke because if I’m going to be stuck on an island for an eternity I may aswell be wankered while I’m getting sun burned.
Matt: I mean Budweiser always goes down well and Conor and I will share so we’ll just have to hope the other guys survived and get something sensible like water.
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
Conor: A pair of budgie smugglers, I’m sure I can get a print of Pete Wentz’s face on my arse.
Matt: I’m pretty sure Bury Tomorrow did some shorts so I’ll go for them because I can deal with a sun burned back but I think a sun burnt arse and bollocks would be rather uncomfortable.
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
Conor: Scarlett Johansson…
Matt: Not Bear Grylls because I’ve heard that’s a lie and he stays in hotels, so just anyone that could actually keep me alive.
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
Conor: Def Leppard from the last time I saw them live in Cardiff as long as I get Cheap Trick too.
Matt: I’d probably go for the first live show I ever saw because it was a hell of a line up, With One Last Breath, Chelsea Grin, Blessthefall and Asking Alexandria (during the Reckless and Relentless tour).
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
Conor: I don’t know his name but he’s the singer of a band called ’Search The City’ and they had a song called ‘The Rescue’ so I think he’d understand.
Matt: Patrick Stump because he seems like a nice chap and I’m sure he’d try and help and I’d ask him to serenade me on the way back.
You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
Conor: Josh because I think he’d die first and it would be a shame to let him go to waste.
Matt: Yeah I’d say them same but more because Harry hasn’t got much meat on his bones, Skips would probably be really helpful in surviving and Conor is sat next to me so I shouldn’t say him.
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
Conor: I’d liked to have saved Tyson Stevens but he died years ago.
Matt: Probably Ahren Stringer, big influence as a bassist and singer and he seems like he’d be a lot of fun to get pissed with.
