Album Review: Leprous - Aphelion
Reviewed by Danny Jewkes

A lot has happened gone on since Leprous’ last fantastic offering ‘Pitfalls’ released in 2019, most notably the COVID-19 pandemic that has brought the live music industry to a grinding halt and Leprous are just one of the many bands that have been affected and have had to reschedule and cancel plans.

But these restless Norwegians have certainly not been idle. They have used their time away from the road to concentrate on creating ‘Aphelion’, performing multiple live streams, including full album performances and even working on an interactive studio session where the band asked the fans to vote for the parameters they wanted the band to explore in a new song, which is included on ‘Aphelion’ and is absolutely fantastic in scope and delivery and is such a great idea!

‘Aphelion’ maintains Leprous’ ambitious sound which fans will welcome with an air of familiarity and be overjoyed and floored with the inclusions of bombastic new elements the band constantly throw at their ever evolving mission to stand on their own merits as one of the best bands to ever come from Norway, which is saying something when you consider the talent that has burst from that beautiful country! Looking at you, A-ha!

Joking aside, Leprous really are a stand out band and impossible to pigeon hole. If you haven’t heard of them before, I guess if you like prog rock/metal, odd time signatures, outstanding drum performances and angelic vocals, you’re in for a treat!
This new release is just another seemingly effortless stride in Leprous’ career to date. There’s a lot more upbeat and uplifting tracks on this compared with ‘Pitfalls’, which was very melancholic. ‘Aphelion’ still drools heartfelt emotion, but is so much louder, more epic and has more range and twists and turns with ear worms that keep you coming back for more and more!
They’ve come a long way from being recognised as Ihsahn’s backing band!
There’s something in the water in Norway and I want some of it!
