DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring a-tota-so
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find a-tota-so sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
So you're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
Chris: Hiding Places by Billy Woods & Kenny Segal. I love every aspect of this album and the work of Billy Woods as a whole, the way this album flows and the stories he tells do it for me everytime.
Marty: Lateralus by Tool, I could listen to that album on repeat forever, i just love the space it creates in my head.
Jamie: Pavement - Terror Twilight cos I could just listen to it forever
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
Chris: The Pastoral - not rustic - world of their greatest hits by The Country Teasers. Because it would be nice to have a change of scenery after being stuck on a desert island for a while and it's a class album.
Marty: Memory Lame by Giraffes? Giraffes! - there's just so much going on in that artwork it's the gift that keeps on giving. I'd love to know how long it took to create!
Jamie: Our new album artwork for 'Lights Out' the artist Simon Curd did an amazing job on it 🙂
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
Marty: Hmmmmm let's go for a bottle of spiced rum, might be tasty with all the coconuts on this island of ours and gets you smashed harder than beers
Chris: Not a big boozer so can i just get a coffee please?
Jamie: Earl Grey all the way
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
Chris: My OXES t-shirt, one of my favourite instrumental bands of all time.
Marty: Definitely grabbing my vinyl copy of 'The Bees Make Honey in the Lions Skull " by Earth, just a gorgeous package and amazing album.
Jamie: Defo grabbing my Last Ground shirt but then I’d probably be wearing it anyway.
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
Chris: Erm the cast of Party Down?
Marty: Our mates in Sang Froid, there wouldn't be a dull moment on the island that's for sure
Jamie: Ray Mears. He knows his shit and has some good stories to tell.
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
Chris: ATP release the bats 2008
Marty: And So I Watch You From Afar at ArcTanGent festival 2018, we were all very wavy and it felt like it was verging on a religious experience, a show we'll never forget.
Jamie: The last Rage Against The Machine UK show from 2001 at Reading. Brings back some good memories.
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
Chris: Probably a member of my other band Cheap Jazz as they will have to rescue me and Jamie if they know what's good for them. That and the fact that who else would care? Dave Grohl ain't gonna save me.
Marty: I'd definitely message kieran from We Come In Pieces, telling him i was in distress but that there was some weed waiting for him and i'm sure he'd be there somehow to save my bacon
Jamie: If Ray Mears wasn’t already with me I’d try get him to save me.
You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
Chris: I'd have to choose Marty, if you've seen Jamie with his top off you're well aware there's not a lot of meat on him.
Marty: Our bass player Chris would be the first to eaten but only because you wouldn't get much to eat off our drummer Jamie
Jamie: Marty cos me and Chris are both skin and bone.
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
Chris: I want to say Captain Beefheart but he was already long gone before this ship went down so a close second would be Benedict Wallers of Country Teasers and The Rebel.
Marty: Kurt Cobain but i fear we're too late to save that poor lost soul so i'd save Mike Patton and get some much needed vocal coaching
Jamie: Jon Bonham but we’re a bit too late.
Providing Josh gets rescued... the band will hit the road in March for a UK tour.
