DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Chellcy Reitsma
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Chellcy Reitsma sat on the beach. The island is far from her home, so how did she end up here and how did she cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
So you're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
Chellcy: Asaf Avidan ‘The Reckoning’. I am obsessed with him and his music because the compositions are beautiful and the lyrics are deep and complex so I’ll have a mental escape with a lot to contemplate. I'm the brainy, nerdy type lol!
Ed: It's a hard choice!. Finally after almost sinking with the boat I chose the Dark Side of the Moon. I believes every time you hear it it’s like a new record, so relaxing and ambient. I barely escaped the wreck, too many albums to choose from! Lol!
Adam: ‘Lateralus’ by TOOL. I'm a total metal head and obsessed with polyrhythms. So I couldn’t let that album sink into the sea it’s my favourite. At least the doctor will have something appropriate to listen too while banging his head on a rock out of frustration from being stuck on an island with Simon and Alan.
Simon: John Mayer. I'm a total guitar geek and likes mellow music he can chillax to.
Alan: ‘All Things Must Pass‘ by George Harrison because it’s a healing album. So we are all going to hold hands, chant and pray around it in hopes for a miracle. Adam, our band doctor, is a bit annoyed about our mystic plans. Ed, our science teacher, suggested to him that we need more than science and reason at the moment since our situation is looking bleak at best from a logical perspective.
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
Chellcy: ‘Hotel California’ by the Eagles because “You can check-out any time you like, But you can never leave!” I'm a sarcastic, pessimistic bitch. Lol!
Ed: I choose Permanent Waves by Rush; that cover always intrigues me. I loves the subtle message on the lady moving away from disaster scene with a grin and the ECG pattern in the title; Rush brilliance at it's best. I'm the hopeful one that believes we’ll actually get off this damn island.
Adam: TOOL’s 10,000 Days because I like the tribalistic art and I'm hoping there will be natives somewhere on the island that I can appease with this poster.
Chellcy: I think he might be suffering from some sort of delusion that he’s a Paul Gauguin type.
Simon: Ben Howard’s ‘Every Kingdom’ because I'm very pessimistic and think there will be a tsunami on our little island, with our current luck, and we’ll end up all drowning in the sea.
Alan: Californication by Red Hot Chilli Peppers because I love the artwork and colours. So basically I plan to zone out in the shack and do some California dreaming to pass the time and avoid the rest of them.
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
Chellcy: A cappuccino. I don’t think I can survive without coffee lol!
Ed: A good single malt Scotch whiskey!
Adam: Vodka because it’s Chellcy’s favorite drink and she can’t have it anymore. So I can have some fun making her jealous that I gets to drink it and she can’t. She deserves the torment after booking this stupid wreck of a boat for the tour anyways!
Alan: Beer - need I say more?
Simon: Beer because he likes to copy Alan since it irritates him. Lol!
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
Chellcy: Pink Floyd ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ hoody.
Ed: Beatles Abbey Road T-shirt
Alan: Probably a Queens of the Stone Age t-shirt
Adam: A TOOL t-shirt!
Simon: I'm going topless because I wants to show off my new tattoo and I've been working out.
Chellcy: Such a show off!
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
Chellcy: My husband of course! He’s my adventure buddy.
Ed: Wouldn’t mind the band mates at all; but alas my daughter Martina (only person I wouldn't want to live without).
Alan: Haha, at least a lover, if I had one at the time.
Simon: My new flavor of the month of course.
Adam: My girlfriend.
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
Chellcy: Our own concert last summer of 2021 so I don’t forget our songs and the wonderful feeling we had on stage. Got to keep them fresh in my mind so when we get off this hell whole of an island we can get back on tour shortly.
Ed: The Pink Floyd Pulse gig I attended in 1994 at Earl's Court in London, unforgettable.
Alan: One Radiohead concert I had been to at a festival a couple of years back - though it would be better to have it on video also.
Adam: TOOL again lol!
Simon: The Imagine Dragons concert I saw in 2017.
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
Chellcy: Keith Richards because he’ll still be alive no matter how long it takes for the bottle to arrive and he’s probably rich so he’ll be able to afford a proper rescue convoy. He’s a tough guy and very capable.
Ed: Bono of U2; a guy you has been involved in many good causes and helped many people through his great musical career.
Alan: Sting maybe?
Adam: Daniel Edwin Carey of course!
Simon: Johnny Depp because he has pirate experience being stranded and getting off of deserted islands. Plus he’s good friends with Keith Richards (Chellcy’s pick) so maybe they can join forces.
You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
At first Ed volunteered because he’s the daddy in the group so he’s used to self sacrifice and just a really nice guy always looking out for the best interests of the group. But we couldn’t spare him because of his science background he just has too many great ideas for our survival. Then Alan wanted to roast Simon after giving him a proper send off of course, for personal reasons. But finally Chellcy’s choice is what we decided on... Adam since he is the youngest so the meat will be more tender. We will make a game out of it since we are bored and have a lot of time to kill. It will take some time and planning to hunt Adam down since he’s in great shape. So we will do it ‘Lord of the Flies’ style in the palm forest, but ours will end with a roasting. Run piggy run!
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
Chellcy: I'm torn between Nick Cave and Patti Smith. So I might die trying to save both.
Ed: I saved Paul McCartney.
Alan: I'm aimlessly searching for Miles Davis. Not sure how one goes about finding and saving a ghost but, whatever!
Adam: Daniel Edwin Carey again (so predictable).
Simon I saved John Mayer so we can be all melancholic together on the beach contemplating our untimely deaths in the tsunami that washed away Devil’s Island.
