DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Ruina

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Ruina

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Ruina sat on the beach. The island is far from the bands home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Harv: I’d have to go with Fever by Bullet. Banger after banger. My first ever metal gig, my Dad took me to Wembley to see Bullet on the Fever tour back in 2010, so it brings back so many memories of a great time in my life.

Sam: Use Your Illusion by Guns because it’s a fucking masterpiece. The tones are beautiful and it’s just so unique.

Chris: It’s a difficult one really because it changes almost weekly. I always go back to Exoplanet by The Contortionist because it’s got a good amount of heavy, light and instrumental musicianship that hooks me every time.

Tom: Juturna by Circa Survive. It’s beautiful from front to back, I love the guitar work and it always takes me back to that summer when I heard it for the first time.

Jason: If I had to pick ONE… it’d probably be the self titled Avenged Sevenfold record. Every single track is incredible and holds a lot of sentimental value to me as it came out when I was first getting into heavier music.

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

Harv: Absolutely the cover for Purple by Baroness. Gorgeous artwork.

Sam: Ride the Lightning because it’s stunning.

Chris: One by Tesseract, which is also in rotation of my favourite album.

Tom: Love Metal by HIM because there’s no better logo than the heartagram!

Jason: For me, it’s With Roots Above and Branches Below by the Devil Wears Prada.

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

Harv: A long neck ice cold beer will do me just fine, hazy preferably.

Sam: Madri!

Chris: Hazy Pale Ale

Tom: European Lagers

Jason: Dead Man’s Fingers Pineapple rum and mix it with the Mango rum

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

Harv: Hands down, the Emperor shirt.

Sam: While She Sleeps hoodie

Chris: Underoath t shirt with the chasing safety artwork

Tom: Iron Maiden hoodie I’ve had since I was 15

Jason: It’s probably my Asking Alexandria St. Anger rip off shirt

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

Harv: 1 person. 3 words. Phoebe - Waller - Bridge.

Sam: I’d like to be shipwrecked with Lewis Capaldi.

Chris: My partner Helen, we usually spend time together drinking wine and ale listening to metal so doing that on an island sounds great.

Tom: In all honesty, I’d rather be shipwrecked alone!

Jason: I hope to god it’s with my best mates Dani and Toby! Both are my rocks for different reasons. A lovely guy and an absolute demon but I love them both dearly.

DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Ruina

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Harv: Devin Townsend Live at the Royal Albert Hall. What a show that was, even ended up going on stage for the final track Universal Flame, which was amazing.

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

Ozzy’s gotten himself out of some mad situations, so I feel like he’d know what to do… maybe.

You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

We all took a vote and I’m definitely not typing this without his permission… but we’re gonna eat Jase.

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

Harv: Mr Matt Tuck of Bullet. I’ve met him a few times now and he’s just sound. He’s been through some shit and takes a lot of shit from the media but stays humble and grounded. Top bloke and a huge inspiration on my songwriting.

Sam: Lars Ulrich

Chris: I’d have to go with Angel Vivaldi. His songwriting and overall guitar work portrays so much varying emotion and feelings that I could listen to his back catalogue all the way through without getting bored.

Tom: Either Travis Barker or Dwight Yoakam, I can’t choose between them!

Jason: Danny Worsnop. He’s hit rock bottom and risen like a phoenix. His voice is versatile and phenomenal. Danny has massively contributed to my own vocal stylings (even if I am the least important member of the band).
