DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring exPorter

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find exPorter sat on the beach. The island is far from the bands home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Henry Kish: Right at this moment I think I'd take Songs for the Deaf, I can listen to that album on repeat with zero issued.

Destin Cavazos: I would take Transatlanticism by death cab, it's such an epic album and I think it would fit the drama of being stuck on an island. The title track alone feels very relevant.

Alec Cavazos: My go to answer for albums would usually take Blink 182s untitled because it is my favourite album and to me has zero skips. BUT, I am gonna switch up my usual answer for any album related questions we get, and go with Never Hungover Again by Joyce Manor. It’s one of my favourite pop punk/emo albums and also has no skips on it. From start to finish it is 18 minutes of great songs. Although thinking about it now, the length might be a bit of a concern if this is the only album I can listen to for the foreseeable future… maybe I grabbed both by mistake 😊

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

Destin: I’d take the cover of The Neighborhood’s “Wiped Out” album. Gotta have something beachy for my island shack.

Alec: For the poster, I feel like I would have to go with the same as above – Joyce Manor. It would serve as like a time capsule for anyone else that may get stranded on the island, like “here’s what I listened to when I was stranded here!”.

Henry: I think it has to be one of The Who’s albums. I had a couple of Who posters growing up…one was the Kid’s Are Alright.

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

Destin: I’m going to go with Piña Coladas. That way I can pretend I’m on vacation and not hopelessly stranded.

Henry: I’m not picky so long as it’s free.

Alec: Well seeing that I am not 21, better safe than sorry to go with something non-alcoholic, and that would be Orange Peach Mango from Trader Joe’s, a top of the line juice. Not that I’m getting paid to endorse that. Choose your juices on your own kids!

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

Destin: My Phoebe Bridgers sweatpants. Best pair of sweats I ever bought. Gotta have those.

Alec: I would save the old Blink 182 shirt that my brother got at their reunion tour in 2009. It has since been worn by our dog and both me and Destin – not at the same time though. However, it is now more a crop top, but still quite stylish.

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

Alec: I don’t know as long as we set up a few boundaries for anyone stranded with us. Plus, with at least the 3 of us on there I think we could crank out at least one more good album!

Destin: The starting lineup of the 1976 Philadelphia Flyers. Or Teddy Roosevelt. He’s outdoorsy, and we could share 'stache tips.

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Alec: One of my favourite live shows is Blink 182’s set at Big Day Out 1999, the jokes are perfect and they are playing all the hits from some older Blink to Enema.

Destin: Death Cab and Charly Bliss at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, in the fall of ‘18! Such a great show, two of my favourite bands in a fun spooky setting. Charly Bliss busted out a Cyndi Lauper cover during their set and I’d love to have a recording of that; I can’t find it online anywhere!!

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

Destin: “Dear P Diddy, How are you? Please come and rescue me and my bandmates on your 175 ft yacht. We haven’t eaten in days. “

Alec: Tom DeLonge and his alien connections would be quite useful I’d say, as long as there is no funny business going on in that spacecraft.

You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

Henry: I'd probably be eaten first since I'm the thickest boy in the band.

Alec: It's kind of a hard decision, like Henry said, he is the thickest boy, but he is also stronger and maybe survival rate would boost. But then again I don't think I could eat my brother.

Destin: Yeah Alec and I can't eat each other or we'll get mad cow disease.

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

Henry: This would be cool, I would have just saved The Who!

Destin: Andrew McMahon, from Jack’s Mannequin and many other great outfits. One of the most talented musicians/songwriters/performers alive today. And he’s just got a great SoCal vibe about him. Plus, with hits like “Swim” and “Island Radio” I feel like he could be good for morale in a desert island. Just gotta build him a piano out of coconuts.

Alec: The musician who influenced me was Tom DeLonge, no question, so I would have to save him. He was who I emulated most growing up on stage and still do to this day. He is the reason I play a Strat as my main guitar and why my first guitar is covered in a random assortment of stickers. Blink 182 is a big influence on the exPorter sound, and they could also use Tom so yeah, I’d save him.
