DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Hellaphant

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Hellaphant

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Hellaphant sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Jason Holmes Lead guitarist of Hellaphant: Foo Fighters - Wasting Light. I could listen to that album 1000 times and not get tired of it.

Chris Arenburg here Bassist of Hellaphant: And I would take Rancid, out come the wolves, mainly because its kicks such amazing ass and rancid fucking rock,, but maybe with enough time on the island I would be able to figure out all the words Tim says.

Gary singer guitarist of Hellaphant: Great question. My current choice is A Wilhelm Screams “Lose your Delusion” so many reasons. Technically it is a great group of songs and it would take me a while to figure it out plus it’s loaded with positive messaging (i listen to a lot of dark lyrics normally) and this album just makes the day better. Being stuck on an island would be depressing so i’d need all the help I could get. Lol

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

JH: There are so many that come to mind for different reasons ... Warrant - Cherry Pie, Blink 182 - Enema of the State .... The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper or The White Album (The White Album or Metallica's Black Album) could drive someone crazy with prolonged exposure. Just looking at a plain colour all day every day. l guess in the end, i'd have to say Green Day - Dookie just because there’s so much going on. It would keep me entertained/interested a while.

CA: Blink182 enema of the state, the reason is self explanatory.

GB: Iron Maiden Killers. I always loved that album and Derek Riggs art was always captivating and the Killers art is when Eddie looks the coolest IMO.

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

JH: Moscow Mule's all the way!

CA: Good ole pilsner for me

GB: Cranberry juice. 🙂 I no longer drink. (Bit of an addiction problem)

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

JH: My Foo Fighters hoodie for the cold nights

CA: Our band, Hellaphant. And I say our hoodies as there the warmest I have found.

GB: I’m with Chris. The Hella Hoodie. Super warm.

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

JH: Anyone but these grumpy bastards! lol

CA: Drew Barrymore, Scarlett Johansson. Just to name a couple.

GB: My wife and my dog. I din’t think I'd even want to subject them to deal with me for a lifetime. lol

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

JH: A Wilhelm Scream at Rum Runners in London Ontario Canada. It was the first time I saw them and they changed my life. I can still feel the energy from that show!

CA: Nofx I heard they suck live

GB: Metallica - Master of Puppets tour pre CB’s passing. I loved the aggression of that era.

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

JH: Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden! He's a pilot and always looking for adventure. He'd come and rescue us for sure!

CA: Nuno from A Wilhelm Scream, because I heard he was a life guard or had something like that.

GB: J had the right idea. Bruce could fly in and get us.

You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

JH: I think that would be me. I have the most meat to spread around.

CA: Jay, then me whoever is the biggest and weakest at the time.

GB:  I have no clue. I’m vegetarian/vegan so I’ll be first to go as I doubt there’ll be much for me to eat lol.

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

JH: Frank Turner. He does everything with purpose and passion. I wish i could be more like that.

CA: Myself, but if picking based upon your description then Gary.

GB: Outside of the band? To be honest. I don’t know. I really don’t know who has influenced me as a person that I could think of. Never meet your heroes lol.
