DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Akkadian
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Akkadian sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
Danny (Vocals): The Doors Debut Self-Titled Album. It has everything on there. It’s chill enough to enjoy laying down on your back, it’s groovy enough to sing and dance to, and it’s psychedelic enough to get lost in.
Max (Guitar): Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here - because it's perfect
Aaron (Drums): The Valley by Whitechapel. This album is so diverse and is one where I never skip a song.
Chris (Bass): Master of Puppets- Metallica. Because I never get bored of it. It is the epitome of Thrash Metal. It has a mix of hard-hitting and melodic songs. It is perfect. PLUS Cliff Burton!
Harry (Guitar): Mastodon, Hushed and Grim. It’s one of my personal favourites and each song offers something special. As an album I could never get bored of it.
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
Danny (Vocals): Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Since I was a kid, I’ve always loved that album cover. I just love looking at it, and seeing all of the different faces on it would trigger my thoughts and imagination enough to pass the time.
Max (Guitar): The Smiths, The Queen is Dead - because Alain Delon
Aaron (Drums): Killers by Iron Maiden. I remember my Dad owning it on CD and it was the first album cover that truly caught my eye. Being a little boy at the time, my little creative brain imagined being in one of the houses looking out the window in the background, seeing ‘Eddie’ roaming the streets at night. I was fascinated. I always appreciated album artworks after then.
Chris (Bass): Slipknot, All Hope Is Gone. It is the album I had as a poster in my room whilst being a teenager. So that would bring back good memories from my childhood.
Harry (Guitar): Avenged Sevenfold’s Life Is But A Dream. I love Wes Langs artwork on that album.
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
Danny (Vocals): This question is evil…my heart says Red Wine, my tongue says Scotch and Ginger Ale on the rocks, but my mind says Beer - so I’ll choose Beer.
Max (Guitar): Cuba Libre - it’s perfect for hot weather (assuming the weather on the desert Island is hot).
Aaron (Drums): Coffee is an absolute must for me. Probably not the wisest of choices in the context to the island, but it’s the one I’m going with haha.
Chris (Bass): COFFEE, COFFEE, COFFEE!
Harry (Guitar): Rum & Coke with Lime.
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
Danny (Vocals): My While She Sleeps hoodie.
Max (Guitar): My Loathe T-shirt. I love it and it reminds me of Tech Fest, the first big festival we played!
Aaron (Drums): My favourite piece of band merch is my Despite Exile T-Shirt. It has a Grim Reaper and a bunch of skulls on it. Pretty metal, but I love the design and it’s super comfortable. Can’t forget to mention how great of a band they are!
Chris (Bass): My Born of Osiris Long sleeve.
Harry (Guitar): My Opeth T-Shirt from the Heritage album.
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
Danny (Vocals): Dua Lipa
Max (Guitar): Batman
Aaron (Drums): Craig Reynolds from Stray From The Path. I feel as if we’d have a lot in common from nerding out over drums to hitting the gym. Would be a proper laugh.
Chris (Bass): With my Dog
Harry (Guitar): Devin Townsend, the guy is a gem.
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
Danny (Vocals): Avenged Sevenfold Live at the LBC from 2009 - pure nostalgia!
Max (Guitar): Eric Clapton Unplugged Live - I have not stopped listening to it since I was 8 years old. So I don't think I'll ever stop at that point.
Aaron (Drums): Definitely Lamb of God at Download Festival 2007 for me.
Chris (Bass): Linking Park - Live in Texas
Harry (Guitar): Opeth live at the Albert Hall.
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
Danny (Vocals): Iron Maiden, specifically the old chap, Bruce. He’s a pilot, so he can jump into one of those Seaplanes and come pick us up pronto!
Max (Guitar): I'll tell Joe Duplantier that I'm the real and only “enfant sauvage” and that I'm claiming back the name…unless Gojira themselves come and give a live performance to my coordinates.
Aaron (Drums): Gojira.
Chris (Bass): Sting - (Message in a bottle song)
Harry (Guitar): Devin Townsend (again).
You've been stuck here for a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
Danny (Vocals): I love him, but I’m definitely eating Max. I live with the guy, so I know the food he eats and the amount of exercise he does - He’s my nutritious man. My organic, free range, tender boy.
Max (Guitar): Chris, the Bassist - who needs Bass?
Aaron (Drums): Chris, our Bassist. He’s the tallest out of us all haha!
Chris (Bass): I am the one in danger here as the fattest! Haha!
Harry (Guitar): Chris, our Bassist, and his delicious Greek body.
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
Danny (Vocals): David Bowie.
Max (Guitar): Lars Ulrich - He showed me that it's possible to be passionate about music...and also have five swimming pools per house.
Aaron (Drums): Definitely Mario Duplantier of Gojira. I’ve always admired his drumming and his energy on stage, but also how hard the guy works. I feel as if a lot of my drumming is inspired by him and he seems so humble outside of music too. He’s always someone I’ve looked up to.
Chris (Bass): Cliff Burton (If was alive)
Harry (Guitar): Impossible question, my career and musical outlook is the sun of multiple musicians. I would say currently I’m very much feeling influenced by Mikael Akerfeldt.
