Walking to the venue tonight was a surreal experience with thoughts running through my mind that quickly detracted from the single figure temperatures. Tonight was the evening of BABYMETAL.
Tonight is all about Babymetal, but first up supporting tonight was a band I was unfamiliar with, Vukovi. The Scottish pop-punk band comprising of core members Janine Shilstone’s vocals and Hamish Reilly on guitar. Janine doing her best to cover every square inch of the floorboards as she effortlessly commanded the stage.
Featuring tracks like Creep Heat, the really heavy number Lasso, Tainted, Mercy Kill which is a slower paced powerful ballad to mix things up a little, Slo, I Exist and La Di Da round out the performance. It was a brief set at around 30 minutes, but a good introduction to many in attendance of this band. Showcasing a range of songs from their albums, they’re a catchy, energetic ensemble with great hooks.
Thematically a blend of punk, heavy, dark instrumentals and up beat chorus’. They put on a great show and were really enjoyed by the awaiting crowd who had come to see another band that enjoys a mix up of genre elements. They were unfazed by the magnitude of the stage and looked and sounded like a well oiled machine. In terms of support, they were a great choice, but as a band to their own right, I definitely think that they’re a band in the ascendancy and are much deserving of a much higher profile.
