DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Callas

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Callas

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Callas sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Dom: Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness because it’s an absolute monster of an album at 28 tracks covering every genre from prog, alternative, thrash metal, pop and everything in between and somehow making it all work. I still have fond memories listening to this on the gargantuan cassette and it blows my mind. It opened my eyes to the possibility of blending other styles of music as a teenager while grasping onto the likes of Paradise Lost’s Icon in the other tape deck for dear life.

Ruairi: Queens of the stone age - Songs for the Deaf. It just has everything and I keep going back to it. No One Knows might be my favorite song of all time with an all time best drum performance across the album to boot. Nick Oliveri was still in the band at the time and he brought a dangerous vibe to the band that got lost over the years. His screamed vocal on the opening track is thrilling. Incredible album that still holds up.

Cormac: Joy Division’s Closer because if I don’t listen to it eleven times a day, I might actually die.

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

Dom: Any Shakira album cover to be honest - need to be reminded what the female form looks like if stuck with only lads on an island. If push comes to shove, Katy Perry will do too.

Ruairi: Kerbdog - On The Turn!

Cormac: The Velvet Underground & Nico...there better be some food on this Island…

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

Dom: Irish Spring water from the Comeragh mountains to get through the first 30 days without perishing. Will also steal/borrow some of the guys beverages they will no doubt mention below.

Ruairi: Beamish.

Cormac: A single plum, floating in perfume, served in a man’s hat.

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

Dom: TOOL - long johns

Ruairi: Metallica - underpants

Cormac: A cup from any band really, drinking from a hat was a bad idea…

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

Dom: Ray Mears so we can get off this bloody ruddy island! Either that or make a mansion out of sticks, chewing gum and local flora.

Ruairi: Our original drum machine

Cormac: Anyone who has been on this Island before and survived.

DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring Callas

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Dom: Alice In Chains - MTV Unplugged

Ruairi: Nirvana - Live and Loud

Cormac: Radiohead Live at Glastonbury 1997

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

Dom: I’m with Ruairi on this one - no brainer.

Ruairi: Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden so he can fly his plane over to the island and save us.

Cormac: The Brass and Woodwind sections of the Irish Coast Guard.

You've been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

Dom: Ruairi could possibly provide a few more nourishing meals than Cormac… could be wrong, would need to weigh them both first.

Ruairi: Cormac is a smoker so gotta be Dom

Cormac: I would have been content to light either one on fire to appease these fickle Island Gods and not resort to cannibalism but I think I’ll just sit back and watch the two lads fight over not eating me.

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

Dom: Nick Holmes from Paradise Lost - both interested in dark music, dry humor and all things Alan Partridge. Also would no doubt have a great moan/banter about the current predicament.

Ruairi: Prince

Cormac: I hope the ship didn’t sink too quickly because that’s a really difficult question to answer…
