Live Review: Existentialist – Newcastle

Live Review: Existentialist - Little Buildings, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne

Support: Mechromorph, Morrow's Massacre and Ovulating Cadaver
Words: Drew McCarthy

I once again find myself in what has very quickly become one of my favourite venues, not just in Newcastle but in the entirety of the UK, to bear witness to something that is guaranteed to be absolutely brutal. Four of the fastest growing UK deathcore bands, Existentialist, Morrow's Massacre, Mechromorph &and Ovulating Cadaver take to the stage.

Ovulating Cadaver are relative newcomers to the metal scene in Newcastle, having only formed earlier in 2024, though these lads put in a performance worthy of one day playing a stage at Bloodstock. While the lyrics are comical in nature, akin to Raised By Owls, there is nothing comical about the musicianship of these lads, their performance is a brutal assault in the best way possible & they are a great band to start the night off with.

Morrow's Massacre are fast becoming one of my favourite metal bands to watch perform live, a bold statement to make after only ever having seen them once previously, but I mean it. Ending your set with a cover of 'Blind' by Korn may be an interesting choice rather than finishing with one of their own songs, their cover is just as good as, if not better than the original.

Mechromorph walk onto the stage to a noticeably smaller crowd than the previous two bands, as the band begin to play however, the room immediately once again becomes a swathing mass of humanity, spurred on by the mesmerising and all guns blazing performance by these lads.

Finally, Existentialist are a very impressive band to behold live, choosing to infuse their own take on deathcore with a healthy dose of black metal, bringing to my mind the work of Abigail Williams,. These lads deliver a masterclass in absolute savagery, with 'The Usurper' being a particular highlight, think Lorna Shore and Cradle Of Filth melded together and that will give you an idea of what these lads are about.

My expectations are not often surpassed when attending a gig, but on this night they were. Ovulating Cadaver, Morrow's Massacre, Mechromorph and Existentialist absolutely obliterated Little Buildings. These are four bands that not only any self respecting fan of deathcore should keep an eye on, but the mMetal community as a whole.
