DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring Burnt Sherpa
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find Burnt Sherpa sat on the beach. The island is far from his home, so how did he end up here and how did he cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
Since I'm a one-man band solo project, I'll answer with an album from each instrument that represents that part of my brain: guitar me would have to bring Maggot Brain from Funkadelic. Eddy Hazel's opening of that album would perfectly reflect the mood I'd be in if I were suddenly stranded on a desert island.
Bass me would bring Hemispheres by Rush, cause Geddy Lee is the man, and that happens to be the last Rush album I listened to, so it's fresh in my head. Drummer and singer me would have to bring Physical Graffiti, because it's a double album, so I'd get to hear that many more songs from one of the greatest singers and one of the greatest drummers in rock history.
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
Hell Awaits by Slayer as a reminder that it could always be worse.
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
Alas, I no longer drink, but in the spirit of the islands, and since I'm stuck here with nothing better to do, I think I'd go with a refreshing Mojito.
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
I don't think this is an actual piece of merch they sell, but I'd love Vermillion Whiskey's Ross Brown's giant hat. He wears it at all the festivals. That bad boy would be awesome for this desert island sun.
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
My wife, of course--she might read this interview!
There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
In 1999 the Plow guys all went to see Fu Manchu and Queens of the Stone Age at SXSW in Austin--I would love to listen to that show again. There was something special in the air that day/night!
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
Sting - he wrote the original Message in a Bottle, so hopefully he would understand. Also, he's loaded and could afford to send the chopper.
You've been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
Since I'm a one-man band right now, I don't care for this question! I guess I'd start with a piece of my quad, though.
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
Maybe Josh Homme - he reinvented himself after leaving Kyuss, and I've had to do the same.
