DEVIL’S ISLAND featuring A Permanent Shadow

DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring A Permanent Shadow

Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.

This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find A Permanent Shadow sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?

Find out now...

Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.

You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?

Station to Station by David Bowie. It’s my all-time favourite record. Six songs, and all of them are perfect. I wouldn’t change one single note on it. Bowie’s singing is amazing throughout!

Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?

As A Permanent Shadow is a solo project under a band guise, it would just be me. And the album cover I’d put on is Instinct by Iggy Pop. Not only is it one of his best and underrated records (it has Steve Jones on guitar), but I used to have a poster on my bedroom wall as a teen. So, I’m quite used to waking up to Iggy’s stare.

There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?

This may sound very un-Rock and Roll, but I haven’t had a drink in 20 years. So, in my case, a bottle of water would do, thank you very much!

Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?

That would be my Sonic Temple T-shirt. I’ve been a fan of The Cult for ages. I love their no bullshit approach! Even after so many years, they still manage to make great records. Under The Midnight Sun, their latest album, is a total blast!

You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?

My two cats. They sleep all day and when they’re awake they show unconditional love! What more can you ask for?

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?

Lou Reed live in Milan in 1989. I have a bootleg recording of that show, and the version of Rock and Roll is the best I’ve ever heard. Besides, that night they played almost all of the New York album, which is my favourite Lou Reed LP.

You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?

I would send a message to David Bowie. As he sang in his song Sons of the Silent Age, “they never die, they just go to sleep one day.” He’s actually from another planet, so in reality he never died, he just returned to his home planet. And from there he can easily conduct my rescue via mind control. So there!

You've been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?

The male cat as he’s fatter than his female buddy. Sorry fatso!

Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?

As David Bowie can take care of himself (remember he’s from another planet), I’d save Peter Gabriel and ask him for free recording time at his Real World Studios in return. My dream is to record an album there!

Thanks for your time. We hope you get back to dry land before you're next due out on tour!

Thanks, I’ll spend my next holidays by the pool!
