Bloodstock Bound: Froglord

As Bloodstock gets closer, we delve deep into the line up to find out more about some of the bands playing the New Blood and EMP stages at this years event.

Today we chat with Froglord

The Razor's Edge: Please introduce yourself and your band mates.

Froglord: We are Froglord, a 4-piece sludge/doom metal band hailing from the darkest swamplands of Bristol. Spreading the word of the amphibian; Froglord is fronted by the amphibious lord himself. Around him he is surround by his three most loyal priests of the swamp. Caudata on guitar, Bufo on bass, and Anura on drums.

The Razor's Edge: How would you describe your sound?

Froglord: If you were to mix the roiling fuzz of Electric Wizard, with the sweaty grooves of Eyehategod and Down, then overlay that with the sounds of a psychedelic batrachian chorus echoing over boggy marshland, you’d find yourself with something sonically similar to Froglord.

The Razor's Edge: How did you land your spot on the Bloodstock bill?

Froglord: We have the deepest honour of performing at this years Bloodstock, after winning the immensely gruelling Bristol M2TM competition.

The Razor's Edge: How tough was this years M2TM competition?

Froglord: The calibre of metal bands that Bristol has to offer is exceptional and all the ones performing this year were no exception to that rule. I think the final this year was truly anyone’s game. Any one of the bands we competed against easily deserves a spot on the New Blood Stage.

The Razor's Edge: What does playing at Bloodstock mean to you?

Froglord: I can’t really express in words how much this means to us all. Froglord has been around for 4 and a half years, and only performing for 3 years of that – due to the pandemic. In that time, we have put out 4 albums, and consistently played shows up and down the country, this really feels like the amalgamation of so much hard work that has gone into that. This was also our second year running in the Bristol M2TM finals, so this has been a specific goal for us all for a long time now. We couldn’t be prouder of this achievement.

The Razor's Edge: For people who’ve never seen you live, what can they expect at Bloodstock?

Froglord: To see a Froglord show is like wandering alone through the swamps after dark. From the distance you hear the rhythmic thrumming of drums and the faint echo of chanting. You stumble upon a gathering of cultists within a great circle of standing stones. At the centre stands the Froglord preaching to his followers. Around him are his loyal swamp priests. Slowly you mind drifts into a hypnotic trance as the fuzz and amphibious terror consumes you. When you come to, you are left wandering how much of it was real and how much was a hallucination caused by the Froglord’s slime.

The Razor's Edge: What day are you performing?

Froglord: We will be performing on Sunday on the New Blood Stage.

The Razor's Edge: What other bands are you looking forward to watching at Bloodstock this year?

Froglord: I’m probably most looking forward to seeing Goblinsmoker and pay homage to the mighty Toad King himself. This year’s line-up is impeccable, if I could I would see them all, but to name a few: Opeth, Igorr, Enslaved, Amon Amarth, and Clutch.

The Razor's Edge: Playing the New Blood Stage is just the first steppingstone in a bands journey. What’s next in your plans for world domination?

Froglord: The rest of this year is looking fairly busy for us on the gig front, with shows planned for every month, including a couple of mini tours. We’re currently in the process of planning some longer stints on the road for next year, ideally taking our amphibious fuzz outside of the UK. Other than that, we’re plugging away at our next album currently, which should take us into next year. Soon the Froglord’s slime shall consume the whole world.

The Razor's Edge: Are you camping with the fans? Which campsite are you heading for?

Froglord: Mostly we’ll be in artist camping, making the most of the luxury portaloos, but a couple of us who have already bought tickets will be in Midgard with some of our amphibious cultists.

The Razor's Edge: It’s festival weekend, what’s your food vendor of choice on site?

Froglord: Am frog, eat bug. But if there’s anywhere selling a paneer curry, that’d be ace.

The Razor's Edge: See you at Bloodstock in a few weeks!

Froglord: See you in the frog pit. Till then, may you LIVE BY THE FUZZ, OR DIE BY THE SLIME!
