EP Review: Liquid Flesh - Vestiges Abrutissants

Formed a decade ago Liquid Flesh strived to honour the old school death metal sound with a raw more direct version of the music they create, they call it Unchallenging Music for Drunk Musicians. I will admit it is always refreshing when a band or artist will be direct and honest that they don't want to create something that is overly technical or pretentious, simplicity can work if done right and work well. The band's new EP Vestiges Abrutissants which translates to Mind-Numbing Vestiges is due for release in December will be the band's fourth release.

The three piece craft a pretty rapid five track EP, the structural makeup of the songs definitely fitting of the bands ethos of keeping things less chaotic and more of a traditional vein. The releases opening track Tenafly Viper gets things going in the right direction off the top, solid and tight riffing, a big deep vocal attack but the most important aspect it had a really cool and very up tempo groove which really hits the mark with me.

Unfortunately I find the big and impressive groove element does not play that larger role with the remaining tracks on the EP and the fact that the groove element is missing does come as a bit of a letdown, as I feel that would have given the remaining songs a bit more depth. I can't fault what Liquid Flesh have provided performance wise within the creation of the remaining tracks, all very tight with a very true and honest production on the finished product but it did not resonate with me and get my excitement levels up compared to the opening of the release.

Vestiges Abrutissants is a release which has some nice parts but is missing the final part, that killer instinct if you will that would really push it over the edge. Definitely not the worst thing I have ever heard but it's not a release I would be rushing to put on again.
