DEVIL'S ISLAND featuring All For Jolly
Welcome to this weeks edition of Devil's Island! Every week we maroon a band or artist on the island and see what they get up to, how they cope with being all alone on a small island in the middle of the ocean. It's not your average desert island and we'll see just how each person copes with the extreme conditions.
This week when we arrived at Devil's Island we find All For Jolly sat on the beach. The island is far from their home, so how did they end up here and how did they cope with life on Devil's Island?
Find out now...
Welcome to The Razors'e Edge and our somewhat lovely, warm desert island. Don't worry about it's name I'm sure it's not as bad as that would suggest.
You're marooned here on this island, but before you ended up shipwrecked you chose one album that you couldn't live without. Which album did you each chose and why?
Jae: I've always answered this with 'Absolution' by muse. But if I really think about it, I think having the minecraft soundtrack could really help get me in the building and survival mindset haha, I could have my starter house build on day one with the piano goodness.
Sammantha: Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds. It's musically stunning and an immersive experience that could provide some escapism from the situation.
Steve: Alien by Strapping Young Lad. It's one of the craziest albums I've heard so it's one to go nuts with.
Pete: I grabbed a copy of “The Sufferer & The Witness” by Rise Against. I saw them last night in Birmingham and I’m still buzzing That album got me through a lot. Including putting up with everyone on this island . It’s the only copy on the island so maybe it’s worth a few quid.
Nay: Opeth - Watershed. Great album that has nice mix of clean and heavy. Although long term something like the Morrowind Soundtrack might be nice while we’re milling about.
Just behind that palm tree is a shack for each of you to stay in, with enough space for you to put up a poster on the wall of one album cover. What album cover do you each chose?
Jae: 'Enema of the State' - Blink 182... You know why.
Sammantha: Pierce the Veil - Collide with the Sky. Jae (my brother and our guitarist / vocalist) loves this band and album and it's a beautiful piece of art.
Steve: What's the Story Morning Glory by Oasis, just to remind me how happy I am to not have to hear Wonderwall and I'll be looking at it thinking, 'things could be worse.'
Pete: I’d put up a poster of Dookie by Green Day. There’s so much going on in that picture it’d kill time while I’m here to spot every detail in it.
Nay: Alcest - Écailles de lune. It’s a nice piece of art.
There's also a bar on this here island. But alas each of you only get to choose one drink for the entirety of your stay. What's your tipple of choice?
Jae: Right now it would be a cold can of Monster, or Lucozade original. But long term, and morning me would be thankful if I choose coffee haha. So I reckon a Costa oat milk and hazelnut latte, my go to when we're on the road.
Sammantha: It's going to have to be an oat milk hazelnut latte. Caffeine is one of my last remaining vices and this also gives that sugar hit too. Delicious. Actually, make that an iced coffee, I'm guessing this island is hot!
Steve: I don't drink alcohol anymore but to make things interesting, Absinthe.
Pete: I don’t drink much anymore however as we’re shipwrecked I’d go for a Lambs spiced rum and coke. I think the situation accounts for a relapse.
Nay: Rubicon black cherry sparkling water.
Your suitcases were lost when your ship sank, but you each managed to salvage one item of band merch. What’s the merch and for what band?
Jae: I have an awesome looking vinyl of 'Collide with the Sky' by Pierce the Veil. I reckon I could make some sort of manual gramophone, failing that it could make a good plate haha
Sammantha: Sorry but it's going to have to be an All For Jolly t-shirt. May be able to sell it to someone if we find out anyone else is on this island. #diybandsalwaysgottapromote
Steve: Electric Callboy's Tracksuit. Love the band and also, the bright colours might help if a search team are trying to find us.
Pete: My “The Flatliners” T-shirt . It’s white so good for the heat. Hope I don’t get sand on it.
Nay: My Alcest t-shirt, it’s my newest piece of merch!
You’re sat on the island thinking “I’m stuck here on this island with my bandmates for eternity”… who would you rather have been shipwrecked with?
Jae: Bear Grylls.. safe bet for survival, however I do think the urine cocktails will get old pretty quick.
Sammantha: To be honest, my bandmates are pretty amazing people. We all support each other well and make a good team. But maybe it would have been better to have been stuck with someone like Shep Gordon so I could spend time listening to his life stories and trying to convince him to do a little magic and work with our band for a bit
Steve: Nigella Lawson
Pete: I’m stuck with my bandmates?! Kill me now. I’d rather have been stranded with my girlfriend. She can then listen to me complain about the fact I’m stuck on an island whiles she complains that it’s too hot.
Nay: My partner although I fear I might slowly drive him insane. Alternatively, a Michelin star vegan chef!

There's a walkman in your pocket, on the tape inside is the recording of the one live show that stands out for you. It could be any show, from any band, anywhere in the world. What show is on that walkman?
Jae: The first time I went to Download Festival was in 2014 (I've been every year since) but that year was the anniversary performance of 'Hybrid Theory' by Linkin Park. It was AMAZING and will always be one of my most favourite live shows I've ever experienced.
Sammantha: Green Day live at Rock Am Ring in 2013. This was my first European festival and Green Day played for hours and it was absolutely amazing. Good times. I love that band.
Steve: I saw Slaughter To Prevail at Download last year and it was insane!
Pete: Paul Simon Live in New York from 2012. Adds a bit of variety to my stay. Wait what format is the Rise Against album being played on?! How long does the batteries on the Walkman last? These things matter.
Nay: Anything from Download 2012, it was my first large outdoor festival, and I have really fond memories with my friends.
You're getting desperate, you decide the only course of action is to put a message in a bottle and hope someone finds it. Your message could be to any member of any band, but should be the most suitable for a rescue attempt. Who is it?
Jae: Fisherman's Friends. Please get on your fishing boat and come save me.
Sammantha: Elton John, come get us in your helicopter and we can write a song together on the way back.
Steve: Bonnie Tyler. She might have found a hero by now so she can send them over.
Pete: I’d send a message to Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden. He has a pilot's license. Will make for a speedy rescue.
Nay: Me and Pete are on the same page here because I also said Bruce from Iron Maiden!
You've been stuck here a while and food supplies are running low. There's only one thing for it... which fellow band member gets sacrificed to help the others survive?
Jae: Pete, I'm sorry but we are fed up of your toxic ass and we want fresh air and food. It is your time haha.
Sammantha: I'd rather starve thanks
Steve: Judging by his stinky ass, I'd guess that Pete's flesh is contaminated, so we'd become zombies and eat each other anyway, so I'll go with Jae.
Pete: Let’s all eat Steve. I hope he’s a tasty on the inside as he looks on the outside
Nay: No offence but I’d rather eat slime on a rock like in that Simpsons episode where they are stranded.
Finally, when the ship sank you each managed to save one person from the wreckage. That person is the one musician that has influenced your career the most, shaped your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Who did you save?
Jae: Jack Black of course 🙂
Sammantha: Dave Grohl probably. He's got drive and such an amazing work ethic and his audio book was really interesting so I think it would be fun hanging out and learning more about him. And I would ask if he would be my mentor
Steve: Matt Heafy from Trivium.
Pete: I saved Chad Smith drummer of Red Hot Chili Peppers I’d be cool to hang out. Then I’d ask for his job.
Nay: There’s too many to choose from. Let’s go with Geddy Lee today!
