Bloodstock Bound: Baelfýr

As Bloodstock gets closer, we delve deep into the line up to find out more about some of the bands playing the New Blood and EMP stages at this years event.

Today we chat with Baelfýr

The Razor's Edge: Please introduce yourself and your band mates.

Baelfýr: We’re Baelfýr, hailing from Peterborough, a five piece consisting of Allan (Vocals) Harry (Guitar) Tom (Guitar) Zak (Bass) and Lorraine (Drums)

The Razor's Edge: How would you describe your sound?

Baelfýr: At its core, blackened death metal, but borrowing from other styles of metal as and when we deem it necessary, we’ve made an effort to make sure our songs don’t all sound alike, sometimes we’ll swing more towards the black metal side of things over death metal and vice versa.

The Razor's Edge: How did you land your spot on the Bloodstock bill?

Baelfýr: We won the Leicester region of the Metal 2 the Masses competition.

The Razor's Edge: How tough was this years M2TM competition?

Baelfýr: The competition wasn’t just tough but was also wildly varied, there was psychedelic rock, industrial, grunge, hardcore and djent styles to name a few, and they all played incredibly well. There were certainly times throughout the contest where we thought that a particular band was a shoo-in for the winning spot.

The Razor's Edge: What does playing at Bloodstock mean to you?

Baelfýr: It means everything, it’s the culmination of our efforts as a band so far, we’ve not been playing live for a terribly long time so to earn the opportunity is huge, it’s given us a platform now that we can use to go on to pursue bigger shows and increase our visibility as a band in the metal scene.

The Razor's Edge: For people who’ve never seen you live, what can they expect at Bloodstock?

Baelfýr:Expect a high energy performance and crushing heaviness, all the energy that the crowd gives us will be returned, we’ll feed off it and fingers crossed, give a performance to remember.

Bloodstock Bound: Baelfýr

The Razor's Edge: What day are you performing?

Baelfýr: We’re on stage on Friday, we’re hoping for a mid to late afternoon slot, but that’s yet to be confirmed.

The Razor's Edge: What other bands are you looking forward to watching at Bloodstock this year?

Baelfýr :It’s a very strong lineup this year, of course we’re looking forward to seeing all the headliners, we can’t miss Emperor and Obituary will be a must see. The Black Dahlia Murder and Mastodon, we could list most of the lineup really.

As far as the New Blood Stage goes, we’ll be hoping to catch The Machinist and Vmbra, who we’ll be sharing the stage with in the week leading up to the festival.

The Razor's Edge: Playing the New Blood Stage is just the first steppingstone in a bands journey. What’s next in your plans for world domination?

Baelfýr:Absolutely, we want this to be the first stage we play at Bloodstock, not the last. We’d love it if we put on a good enough performance that we’re invited back to play the Sophie stage. We’ve still got a lot of the UK to cover, we need to get to Scotland and Wales and with any luck we’ll get over to Ireland too. We’re aiming high as well and putting some feelers out in mainland Europe so fingers crossed we’ll be bound for foreign shores before too long.

The Razor's Edge: Are you camping with the fans? Which campsite are you heading for?

Baelfýr: Most of us will be bringing partners so we’re in with the fans rather than artist camping, most likely we’ll be in Midgard.

The Razor's Edge: You’ve gotta keep hydrated at Bloodstock, what is your drink of choice for the weekend?

Baelfýr:

Allan – I’m not a drinker so I’ll be on the coke (Coca Cola)
Harry – Timothy Taylors Landlord
Lorraine – Water
Zak – Thatchers Gold
Tom – A selection of beers and ciders
